Our Analytical Research and Development Department, at Pfizer R&D in Sandwich, UK plays a critical role in transforming patients' lives around the world by providing the analytical chemistry support for the development and manufacture of medicines for studies at all phases of clinical development.  As part of Worldwide R&D and Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Small Molecules, we are responsible for the analytical science that supports the development of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and drug product processes. 

We are seeking a senior scientist with experience in analytical project leadership to join our Analytical Research and Development (ARD) team in Sandwich. 

Job Focus

The successful candidate will have a strong analytical chemistry background and will support Pfizer's development portfolio through matrix leadership of analytical chemistry project teams. They will use their experience and broad knowledge of separation and detection techniques, method validation, impurity control strategies and ICH guidelines to ensure project teams develop effective and robust analytical methodologies and clinical phase appropriate specifications. They will work in cross-functional project teams and support partner lines from chemical and formulation development, and manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Direct a project team of analysts to provide quality analytical data to support our partner lines process and formulation development, and optimisation.
  • Will use extensive knowledge and experience of analytical chemistry to guide the development of state-of-the-art analytical technology for testing of development samples including starting materials, intermediates, in-process control samples, drug substances, drug products and excipients.
  • Provide exemplary analytical support to projects, with the expectation that the analytical technology will be suitable for transfer to clinical and commercial manufacturing environments.
  • Will represent the analytical line on cross-functional project teams.
  • Be a lead author of analytical sections of CMC regulatory documentation, e.g. IND, IMPD, CTDs.
  • Provide technical coaching/mentoring to colleagues within their project teams and across ARD and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
  • Provide presentations, training and advice to others to share learnings and promote increased scientific, technical and strategic understanding around the area of analytical chemistry and pharmaceutical development.
  • Be a positive advocate for new technology, process improvements and for the application of computational tools and digital design approaches.

Qualifications


Honours or Masters degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related discipline with a high degree classification (e.g. equivalent of U.K. 1st or 2nd class).

PhD degree in Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field with some experience in the development of analytical techniques is desirable.

Skills and Experience

  • A team orientated person with a strong track record of project leadership through matrix or direct management.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential for this highly interactive position.
  • Excellent project management and organisational skills are highly desirable.
  • A very good knowledge of small molecule pharmaceutical analytical science and able to apply technical skills and knowledge to projects independently and proactively with minimal supervision.
  • Candidates should be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of analytical method development and validation strategies, with a good understanding of regulatory expectations, e.g. ICH guidelines
  • High level of practical competence with good laboratory safety awareness is expected.
  • Confident in the use of diverse computational, modelling and simulation tools is desirable
