Job Details

The company

We are an ambitious business organising our own events and conferences (in UK and US). Our events and programmes connect changemakers and create a positive impact on the legal industry. Everything we do delivers real-world change. In 2016, we organised the world’s first lawtech startup conference and our events now attract thousands of attendees from around the globe. Since then, Legal Geek has launched the first European lawtech startup map, run access to justice events, and created a mentoring programme that supports underrepresented groups in the sector.

The culture

We are a passionate, respectful and hard-working team. Everyone is encouraged to learn and grow, but to also have fun. Each month we have a team social (think VR and escape rooms, not just a trip to the pub), and also attend industry events to broaden our horizons. Every autumn we run an away-week where we plan the future of the business as a team, in 2021 this was held in Lisbon.

We are a small team where you can have a big impact in an informal and collaborative working environment. We have a hybrid model, working flexibly from home and in the offices.

Key responsibilities

In your role as the Event Manager, you will be reporting directly to the Founder. You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the company events including event operations, logistics, supplier/freelancer management and event production.

You will be joining the company three months before our annual conference which is a 3,000-person conference in an 80,000-square-foot dry-hire venue. You will also be working on planning our launch into the USA in 2023.

The role

  • End-to-end management of events
  • Manage an accurate and up-to-date budget, sometimes in multiple currencies
  • Research venues, suppliers and contractors, then negotiate prices and hire
  • Create new, innovative experiences at our events
  • Create detailed event plans, and brief the team on these plans
  • Liaise with sponsors/partners about their stand requirements and logistics, including maintaining our exhibitor manuals so they are up to date and relevant for different individual events and sponsors
  • Work to reduce our environmental waste including being a single-use-plastic free event
  • Attend site visits with key suppliers and also sponsors when required
  • Lead as the on-site manager for the setup and breakdown of the events, including planning and managing the on-site vehicle schedules, signage plans and printing, H&S, and on-site deliveries
  • Create post-event debrief reports, sharing key learnings and areas to improve

Requirements

  • 3+ years of event experience. Ideally with some international experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organised, able to multitask and efficient
  • Good attention to detail
  • Able to act quickly to solve problems on the spot and also identify and foresee potential problems that could arise
  • Ability to work independently towards deadlines and financial targets
  • Negotiation skills when looking for the best price from venues, suppliers and contractors
  • Tech savvy and able to pick up new systems quickly
  • Excellent people skills

Benefits

  • Working in a small and close-knit team
  • Flexible hours and hybrid working - we are open to finding a schedule that suits you
  • Casual working environment (dogs very welcome)
  • On-demand access to hundreds of amazing coworking spaces
  • Masterclass.com access
  • Mental Health First Aid Training
  • Early finish on Fridays
  • 25-days annual leave (plus bank holidays)
  • Monthly team socials
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Salary: £30-40,000

Company

Legal Geek [www.legalgeek.co] was founded in 2015 as a legal tech startup community.

We bring change to the legal industry by connecting, informing and inspiring. We have defined a simple ethos for our events:

1. Come to learn and to teach
2. Come to make friends, not to sell
3. Dress comfortably [please, please, no ties]
4. Look after your fellow law-gends, you may need their help someday
5. This is your community, please pitch in and help. You will be rewarded

We organise the Legal Geek Conference in London, which attracts 2000+ attendees from 40+ countries and has even trended on Twitter. In 2019 we launched Legal Geek North America, a conference in NYC, that attracted 500 attendees in our first year! We are the Event Partner for the Barclays Eagle Lab Incubator in London and organised the first-ever women in law tech meetup series and first legal meetup helping millennial talent. In addition, we run a mentorship programme and Law for Good, a not-for-profit which organised the biggest online courts hackathon for the Judiciary of England and Wales with the MOJ, SCL and Richard Susskind.
