Job Description

When meeting us, you’ll quickly discover that the best thing about the ABI is the people.  We’re hugely proud that 100% of our people feel colleagues within their team respect each other. If that sounds like your kind of culture, read on to find out how you can join us.

We are open to flexible, part time and/or job share working – please let us know if this would be your preference. We’re currently working in a hybrid way with at least 40% of time in the office.

We’re looking for an Assistant Director, Head of Conduct Regulation to lead the strategy, development and promotion of ABI policy proposals on conduct regulation and wider regulation issues that affect the UK insurance and long-term savings industry, both in the UK and overseas.

We welcome people who are new to insurance (most of us were when we joined!) – as well as those with experience.

What’s the job?

  • Lead the ABI’s operational relationship with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).

  • Lead policy debates and put forward industry-wide policy positions to the regulators, to inform their policy formation process.

  • Act as a leader in the ABI’s Regulation Directorate, responsible for representing the interests of the UK long-term savings sector in meetings with key stakeholders (e.g., in Government, regulators), in the media and by undertaking speaking engagements at conferences and events.

  • Develop and motivate a team of high performing colleagues.

  • Work closely with ABI members on Conduct issues, through regular engagement as well as through collective engagement in ABI committees and working groups

  • Engage with senior executives in ABI member companies on issues of strategic importance and work with colleagues to produce a high-quality events programme.

What skills do you need?

  •  Leadership – you can manage, develop and retain a team to deliver work across a broad range of objectives

  • Policy – you easily digest large quantities of detailed material and present it in a way that is easily understood by all.

  • Lobbying and influencing – you can gain the support of senior people and argue persuasively to deliver strategic objectives.

  • Strategic thinking - you identify and act on emerging opportunities, challenges and risks.

  • Relationship management – you work collaboratively and build relationships with decision makers and colleagues, both on a human level and to advance the ABI’s policy asks.

Throughout the interview and assessment process, we will be looking for you to demonstrate the ABI’s values; We are Brave; We take Ownership; We are Appreciative; We are Human and We are Curious.

Inclusion matters to us:

At the ABI, we feel empowered to bring our whole self to work without fear of judgment and embrace all our differences as every voice matters.

We welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds and we run our application process a bit differently – we’ll ask you application questions which are relevant to the role and the skills we need. We don’t assess based on CV or past experience to ensure our process is fair, inclusive and everyone has equal opportunity to demonstrate their suitability.

We are proud to be a Disability Confident Employer and are committed to making reasonable adjustments where required. Additionally, where practicable. We offer an interview to disabled candidates who meet the minimum requirements for a role.
