Motherhood sharpens the brain

Mothers' brains become more alert after childbirth, a study claims.
The research by Craig Kinsey, professor of neuroscience at the University of Richmond, Virginia, found that female animals perform better after childbirth than before, with animals becoming braver, faster at finding food and having better spatial awareness. Professor Kinsey believes this is likely to be true for human mothers too.
Previous research has shown that women' brains shrink during pregnancy, leading to confusion and memory problems, but Professor Kinsey thinks this is because the brain is adapting to the additional demands of motherhood.
His research also shows that motherhood may confer a protective affect on diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Legal profession needs to change working practices or lose female talent
A study of 13 top City firms has found that they risk losing female talent if they do not reform their working practices.
The research, to be presented by the Attorney General, shows that many firms still favour long hours and presenteeism and see home working and flexible hours as soft options.
There are fears that the current economic climate could entrench these opinions.
In a foreword to the research, by City law firm Addleshaw Goddard and charity Working Families, Cherie Booth Blair calls for a cultural change in law firms if they are to retain top talent.
The research also shows that younger clients favour law firms that adopt flexible working.

Women 'more stressed' by economic crisis
Women are more likely to report physical symptoms and unhealthy behaviour related to worries about the economic situation, a US survey has found.
The survey, by the American Psychological Association, found families are most worried about food, housing healthcare and transport as the economy founders, but women were more likely to show physical signs of stress.
