Commute times fall as workers chose to work smarter

Date: 10:52pm, 03 Nov 2008

Fewer people are spending over an hour to get to work - the first drop in commuting time for a decade.

Deal with the pay gap, says poll
The vast majority of people want the pay gap between men and women to be closed regardless of the economic recession, a poll has found.
The poll for women's rights organisation Fawcett Society and UNISON found 83% of women and 74% of men voted in favour of closing the pay differential.
Some 80% said they wanted the Government to do more to ensure women are paid the same as men for doing jobs that require similar levels of skills.
Some 64% of women and 59% of men surveyed agreed that they would be more likely to vote for a politician if they thought he/she was committed to ensuring equal pay.
"Current equal pay laws are complex, weak and ineffective," Bronwyn McKenna,
UNISON's Director of Organising and Membership, said. "We know that women
earn on average only 83p for every £1 earned by men; 60p in the case of
women part-time workers…Yet only 126 women won equal pay cases last year –
enough to fit comfortably onto two double-decker buses or one bendy bus in
London. The legislation must be updated. UNISON's challenge to the
government is: will you make history as a great reforming government,
bringing equality law up to the standards of the 21st century?"

Demand for homeworking rises
Rising numbers of staff are looking to work from home, says a new study.
Research conducted by TipTopJobs.com shows almost double as many employees were looking for homeworking in September than in the previous month.
The online jobs website received 1,673 applications for home-working roles in September, a 42 per cent rise on the 1,176 made in August.
Analysts warned this could be due to people seeking to save on rising petrol prices at the time.
