Family weekend at Cambridge Science Festival

Date: 10:44pm, 10 Mar 2008

Do your children fancy learning about the science behind Dr Who? Or seeing a life-sized moving polar bear?
If your children are into science or just Dr Who fans, the Cambridge Science Festival may be for them.
All events are free and this weekend [15 and 16 March] is devoted to the family. There are over 90 events planned over the weekend for children from 5 years old up. Many events are interactive, for instance, children can design and construct a rocket car, bottle their genes and build an AM radio.
Patron of the festival and Countdown star Carol Vorderman will formally open the event on Saturday.
Some of Dr Who’s classic monsters along with replicas of characters from the new series will form part of an exhibition and Dr Paul Parsons will explain the science behind the programme.
Bjorn, an animatronic polar bear will feature in a talk about the lives of polar bears, their behaviour and the increasing threat to them from global warming. Inside the bear is a highly skilled performer operating all the movements and the live sounds he produces.
For most of the events, visitors can just drop in without booking.
Brochures can also be requested by emailing csf@admin.cam.ac.uk or ringing the team on 01223 766766.
Full details of all events are available on the Science Festival website.
