Ask the expert: what are extended schools?

Date: 9:20pm, 17 Apr 2008

As part of its Every Child Matters programme, the Government wants all schools to offer some basic extended services which they can develop with other partners, such as existing after-school clubs.
For smaller schools, this might mean partnership with other neighbouring schools. Schools will have to provide high quality 'wraparound' childcare from 8am-6pm all year round. They will also have to provide a mix of activities such as homework clubs, sport and music; parenting and family support; easy to access referral to other services such as health; and wider community access to IT, sport and arts facilities and adult learning. There is no one model that schools will have to follow and each school will have to consider its local needs.
Services will not necessarily be provided on the school site and will not be run by the school's teachers. Many schools already have extended facilities and they are monitored by Ofsted. The Government has said that all children should be able to access extended provision by 2010.
