Hobbling into Summer

I had forgotten that I am not a natural when it comes to pregnancy. Well, obviously it is natural, but I am definitely not one of those women who can swan around “loving being pregnant”, all earth mother and glowy. I am more of the moany, spotty and achy type.

In the last few weeks, as well as pelvic bone aches causing me to hobble and heartburn which could keep Gaviscon in business, I have been getting increasingly cross with people (including complete strangers in retail outlets and school crossings) commenting on the size of my bump. “I can’t believe you have until September”, “my friend was much smaller than you” and “gosh isn’t it large!” I KNOW! I am carrying it around! It’s HEAVY!!

I am a small person, below average height, and have not put a lot of extra weight on elsewhere – so my belly turns corners before I do. At 31 weeks I am now entering the stage where it takes 3 years to roll out of bed. And if I feel big now…….

Working at home has been a saving grace actually. When I sit down in the morning, and work all day at the computer, then I hardly have time to notice the aches and pains. Keeping busy definitely works for me, which is why I am going to keep working for as long as possible before taking maternity leave. The hours might get less, and the afternoon naps more, but busy is best I think.

And I am quite glad that we have the school summer holidays to get through too – bound to always be something to get on with. Due to a great shift pattern in our house I am lucky enough to have built-in childcare from about 10am every day, plus two grandmas and countless friends who have already said they are happy to help (I am one of the lucky ones).

And we have a trip to the Isle of White to look forward to next week. Hooray! Going with the family, who all tell me to sit down a lot  [big smile]. Little madam keeps pointing it out on the weather map on BBC breakfast every morning. She is as excited to be going to a “real island” as I would be to going to a 5-star Caribbean beach resort. The fact we get to go on a ferry makes it feel more like a holiday for all of us, I think. I must admit I felt cheated when we went to Paris on the Eurostar – it was lovely there of course, but the journey was a let down as I didn’t notice the difference really between the Kent countryside and that of Northern France – so felt less like I had “gone abroad”.

The only danger this August will be that our normal routine will slip, and my working hours along with it – my daughter doesn’t really wake early unless poked, and as I am getting more tired I doubt I will be rushing to set the alarm before 7am.

Must be disciplined…must be disciplined.......
