I AM setting up a business

This could easily turn into a blog about a lot of things. I’ve never written one before and that in itself has potential to be a subject all of its own – but I’ll resist (self discipline being sorely needed right now) and keep to my brief: I’m currently trying to set up a business. My husband keeps telling me to drop the ‘trying’ and say that ‘I AM setting up a business’. He’s right, of course. However having left the work place almost 4 years ago, when we started a family, I have noticed that my confidence has soared in some respects but plummeted in others. I am so proud of my children (the eldest is now 3 ½ and the youngest 1 ½) for weathering their first years seemingly unscathed. I am proud also of myself and my husband for having, just about, survived the maelstrom of parenting so far. Outside of my role as a mum, though, I feel on much more wobbly ground.

I am incredibly lucky that it has been possible for me to be at home full time for the children all this while. However, as my youngest is gearing up to start nursery in 6 months and my eldest is a year off from reception, I’ve started to think about what that means for me. I’ve toyed with many variations on the returning to work theme but have shied away from making them a reality. I know that the longer I leave it the more adept I will become at dissuading myself. So, after long discussions with my husband, we decided that opening up a business in a field that I know and am comfortable in would play to my strengths and re-ignite forgotten ones. The business in question is a baby retail shop.

I’ve been researching this on and off for a few months now and, following a visit to a trade show, kick-started a number of different plans of action. Unfortunately, and much to my frustration, they’ve been lying in ‘to do’ piles on the study floor pretty much since that first excited flurry. I’ve found that the spells when the children are napping, or are in bed and my brain has got a few whirrs left in its cogs, are so brief that it’s been difficult to get any momentum. With great reluctance I therefore agreed with my husband that we should look into some part-time help.

There followed an incredible whirlwind of events: an ad placed on Gumtree generated 200+ replies in just one weekend. By the Tuesday we had finished our interviews and by Wednesday, a wonderful Australian girl had moved in with us. I didn’t know if I was coming or going and had to keep excusing myself as I was constantly on the brink of tears. This was so incredibly different from everything that I thought we had planned. To be fair, and in a less emotional state of mind, what we had planned still holds and this situation is just whilst our lovely Australian girl finds a place of her own. In the meantime, I can’t deny that it’s of enormous benefit to the children that they can get used to her constantly yet gradually and now, nearly two weeks later, I’ve been able to sit down at the computer, uninterrupted, for the longest time that I can remember. On which note, I had probably better do some work…

Have your say

I fully appreciate your 'to do' piles etc. I have them going back years. Unfortunately I have found that mother has affected my memory - so I forget where they are. I, like you, am trying to set a business going - its hard to keep the momentum going. Good luck with the business.

firstly i would like to say i hope the business goes well for you!!!! I too started my own business and i have to say i have also been amazed at the rate the work has come in. I am a part qualified accountant and decided that i would set up a bookkeeping business. At the moment its worked well especially with my 18 month old monster( not really he is lovely) running around. Anyway if you want a bookkeeper let me know, i can help with all sorts of issues from bookkeeping to tax advice. Take care and Good luck!!

I'm really interested in hearing more about your book keeping business. I'm also a PQ accountant and have been thinking along the same lines. Have decided to not go back to my job in London but still want to keep my hand in and continue studying. Could you tell me how you went about this. Good luck.

Well done to all you amazing mums out there. I have worked over the years while parenting and studied part time evenings. Finally, after many years stepped off the world of 'full time' work in the summer to set up a hospice project and now seeking part time work to fit around this. Go for your dreams, keep focussed. It all works out in the end. Enjoy the children though - they grow real fast!

I'm a lawyer by profession although I am currently developing a product for kids. I have found my lawyer skills invaluable in dealing with all the tricky issues. Perhaps we could do a swap of skills? Let me know if you'd like to talk further. Good luck with your venture - one day it will all come together and you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. All the best Tracey

I have decided to start to my own business and am a member of the AAT. They have so far provided me with a lot of information and support, so I highly recommend completing this qualification and becoming a 'member in practice' with the AAT. Also contact your local 'Business Link', they put on free seminars and you can meet up with a business advisor for free to discuss your business etc. I hope this helps.

I am too interested in starting my own business. As a mother of two boys 3 and 4 I have spent the last 12 months throughly researching the greeting card industry to determine whether there is a gap in the market for corporate greeting cards. However, as time passes, the business idea seems to fall in the background and when you have been off work for 3 years looking after children, I have found that my confidence and motivation has plumeted. Any suggestions on motination and confidence building?

My advice is this: You need to take action today or the 'gap in the market' will be gone tomorrow. The more you leave it the more you will loose confidence and the timing will not be right. I have just started my own business with a company in the natural health and beauty industry and when looking for something to do the main questions you need to consider are: Is it a growing industry (e.g. is there money still to be made), is it something that people want, do you have the start up (time and money) needed to make it generate what you want (are you looking for a hobby that gives you pocket money or a business that can provide financial freedom) and is it something that you can see yourself getting really passionate about? If you have always wanted to work for yourself and have the ambition, with 7-10 hours a week to give can I suggest that you take a look at what I am doing which is incredibly flexible around family and existing commitments, no investment to start and whilst I am self employed I have the backing of a large company for support so am not on my own for help on how to work, plan and grow my business? The result is I am building a business that will pay me a full time salary working very part time hours, thus giving me time back to have a life and see my family, and build my self confidence from my own achievements. Listen to my information line (local rate from landline) 0844 453 2027, where you can leave your details for more information. Good luck, Lucy

Hi Ladies, well I to run my own successful business called Kerlen Ltd and produce a product called Multi Brella which might be of interest to you, and I fully understand how hard it can be to run your own business and look after children aswell and take car of your house, but well done to you all for stepping out and reaching your dream, and if things get hard just keep going and enjoy the support you get from websites like these, and if any of you want to know more about the product although I guess you all have by now then please get in touch with me.

I can highly recommend the Business Support Team at your local Revenue & Customs. They run workshops such as "Becoming Self-Employed", which was very useful for being clear on the financial side of working for yourself and the benefits and obligations you are under i.e. paying your national insurance. Have a look at the hrmc.gov.uk website for loads of info. including the Self-Employed Helpline. You can ring up and register in under 5 minutes!

Would anybody be interested in an admin service adhoc? Reading all your blogs, it just occured to me that this might be the ideal part time business for me!! I used to run my own business, and have two children, and I know how much of a nightmare it is trying to fit everything in! I now work as a business administrator but I am an entreprenuer at heart and can't resist thinking of new ventures!! Just playing around with the idea at the mo - thinking creating databases, mail merges, mail outs, research into new customers etc- its all time consuming and if you could get it done at a reasonable price in a decent turn around time? Any ideas or suggestions welcome!!

I HAVE started a business! Well, Two actually! That seems big headed but its true.. and its all got to be fitting in well with my 6yr, 3yr and 6 month old kiddy-winks! It distracts me nicely from the moving about of toys that used to fill up my days. The house doesn't seem less tidy, and we have a few quid more to distract us further. I'm so loving working to be honest as much as I love being a mum I feel happy to be busy elsewhere too. The aim of a successful career and being a loving doting mum can be a balancing act, but I'm having fun and learning to juggle! I have just registered and it's so nice to read all of your comments. I love working part time and it makes it worth it when I pick up my two year old from nursery and she runs to me with the biggest smile on her face. However, I am finding it hard with the responsibilities of my current job and at the moment I feel that I want a change and to do something for myself and my family, rather than working my socks off for someone else. The trouble is I don't have an idea yet so I am miles behind you all...good luck everybody and keep the faith! x
