Crawling into 2008

Does anyone else feel MORE exhausted after a couple of weeks off work? I'm sure many of you do - but probably because you have been worked off your feet cooking, cleaning and entertaining. I have done a fair amount of this too, but not as much as some. My sister and brother in law came for Christmas, and they are ideal house guests (she clears up all the time and he cooked Christmas lunch - result!). And as for keeping house - well there is only a certain amount of that I will do before I give up and leave the house upside down (innate laziness when it comes to housework).

Logically I have no reason to be tired as I have been sleeping more than is usual, sitting down an awful lot, and watching an obscene amount of costume drama's.

Surely I should feel refreshed, bouncing with the joy of a fresh start in 2008? Well as I groan and crawl on all fours into the New Year, I have realised that I am one of those people who obviously thrive on my usual working routine. Sleeping more than 7 or 8 hours a night makes me feel exhausted, as does the inevitable "slowing" of my brain use during holidays and the lack of normal exercise routine (can't bring myself to go running when there is a box of chocolate in the house and Clash of the Titans to watch).

I know that resting from work does the world of good overall, but it is with some sense relief that I return to the real world, dust cobwebs off my brain and open up the laptop again.

However, my first challenge of 2008 is trying to find time to work whist having a child off school until the 7th. Leading up to school age I always knew this wouldn't be easy, and so I am glad that I made the changes to my working life when I did. I have no idea how I would manage this week otherwise - especially as my usual steadfast "Grandma" - always available and cheerful to help - is not available having de-camped up north to her daughters for the festive period. Luckily today little one is at her friends house for a few hours, so I can catch up a little. Otherwise it is a matter of working around her, setting up activities, games and switching on the electronic babysitter occasionally (Miss TV). Thank goodness for all the craft stuff she was given, and the need to make thank-you cards!

Have your say

Goodness I can relate to this. I feel I have had enough (after a wonderful Christmas) of mulching around the house. The house is permanently a mess with the children around and with the animals wandering in and out of the house and moulting fur everywhere. I long to get back on the phone and have tried the last couple of days but keep getting the 'Oh she/he isn't back until the 7th January'. I've finally given up and decided to get out and about so have gone for long walks with my children and taken them swimming. Him indoors is feeling unwell with 'man flu' so it's best to keep myself and the children out of the way anyway. I think tomorrow I shall give the last of the stollen and christmas cake to our chickens and say goodbye to the fattening food. Well here's to a positive 2008!
