Back to work

So while the rest of the country seem to be starting their Easter holidays, we have just finished ours so it is back to work chez WAHM.
Our holiday was great, we even had some sunshine and I managed to (slightly) burn one of my arms in beating sun on a beach in Torquay. I was amazed to see LOADS of women in bikini's, worshipping the sun as soon as it came out, but admit it did feel hot enough.
I recommend Torquay, a lovely area. Loads of coastal walks (caaaarrry meeee pleeeeease DADDY!) and a glut of cheese toasties, cream teas and chips. Ideal really. Lots to do around there with the kids too. We visited a model village, a fantastic cave, a living coast to get up close to some penguins and lots of great beaches with a book for me and sand and stones for the princess and her dad. Seemed to suit us all.
Earlier in the week we visited the lovely Cotswold wild animal park (mummy, how big are monkey eggs?). And generally did a lot of laughing and sleeping.
Plus, this holiday reintroduced me to grapefruit for breakfast (love hotel breakfasts).
So now it is over, and I have returned to a long long list to work on. Still, I was secretly pleased to get back to work. I enjoy it, I really do. Now that I work at home 4 days a week and choose my hours, I find that I rarely feel stressed and almost never feel guilt about being a working mum - as far as the princess is concerned as long as I am upstairs, or tapping away while she is watching telly, she is happy. The fact that I am there when she wants me is enough. Plus I have the flexibility to stop when she needs me, and burn the midnight oil to catch up if necessary.
Taking the plunge into this way of working has proved to be a very very good thing.

Have your say

I would love to hear about the kinds of jobs mums like you are doing from home. My daughter is 13 but after two years of (not) managing the work/school holidays conundrum I am seriously looking into homeworking. She doesn't need me in the same way as she used to, but I would like to make the most of these last couple of years, before she disappears into semi-adulthood, by being at home more. Lots of the homeworking jobs seem to be in sales, but I am more of a creative type, although I have good self-discipline and drive.
