Some 24% of nurseries in the UK made a loss last year and childminders are earning an average salary of just £7,600, according to a government report.
The report shows 63% of nurseries made a profit or surplus last year and 11% broke even. Of those nurseries which made a profit, only 40% made more than £10,000, with the average salary drawn by owners being just £13,500.
More than 50% took home earned less than £20,000 and around a third drew no salary.
Salaries for childminders were an average of £7,600 and 60% of childminders had frozen their fees due to the recession. Both blamed lack of demand as working parents seek to save money on childcare.
Nurseries also blamed staff costs. Childcare costs are rising above inflation in the UK, which has the highest costs in Europe.
