With over 300 years’ experience, we like to think of ourselves as experts when it comes to understanding our customers’ needs. But as well as helping millions across the globe with their finances, we also employ over 145,000 people who need just as much attention.
We pride ourselves on diversity and draw on the different experiences of our staff so that we can add value to our business. Everyone has a chance to share their ideas and make their opinions heard, meaning that their suggestions shape our future.
Since 2005, we’ve faced off some tough competition to repeatedly secure our place in The Times Top 50 Places In The UK Where Women Want To Work. As gender’s a key strand in the diversity and inclusion programme, we focus on employing more women in senior positions. Our former Chief Executive Deanna Oppenheimer was so committed to preventing gender from being a barrier in banking that she set up the Women’s Initiative Network (WiN) in 2010.
WiN’s mission is to encourage, inspire and support women to realise their potential. It gives female colleagues a chance to meet in a professional yet relaxed environment, where they can share stories and insight. This means women know where to turn if they need a helping hand and it’s these contacts who could further their careers in the future.
As we offer such a diverse range of roles our teams come from all walks of life. So to ensure that everyone can make the most of their talents we offer specialist training from day one. It doesn’t stop there though. Once our people have settled in, regular development activities assure their career progression. Plus, as all our vacancies are advertised internally, they never have to look far for their next move.
Besides earning a competitive salary, working for Barclays gives you access to a wide range of benefits which can improve your general day-to-day life. As well as the chance to join the Childcare Voucher Scheme, we’ll also give you generous maternity, adoption and parental leave when you need it most. Day to day transport’s taken care of with a variety of initiatives including Buyacar, Bike4work or a Season Travel Ticket Loan. As part of Barclays you’ll have access to discounts on everything from CDs to the gym.
The feel-good-factor is all part of the deal. We want to help you to help the causes that matter to you most. We'll support your volunteering by giving you grants and time off work. Or if you’d like to regularly donate to a charity, we’ll double any donation you choose to make through your payroll.
On top of all this there’s private medical cover, up to 30 days’ holiday, Sharepurchase and Sharesave and the choice of joining Barclays Afterwork, one of the best pension schemes around.
Lisa Wilson, Regional Assessment Facilitator
I started in 1997 and since then I’ve had a break to have my son, as well as go travelling, and Barclays have welcomed me back again and again. I’d been a Branch Manager for four years when I went on maternity leave. I’ve always been extremely independent, and as much as I loved being a mum I missed the buzz of working with my team. I wanted to come back but was worried that I wouldn’t be able to manage it all. In my previous role I’d really enjoyed interviewing candidates, so when I was thinking about returning to work I spoke with my area director to see if anything similar was available. Barclays were great, they created a seconded role three days a week which has enabled me to spend time with my son, and they’re even flexible with my days. The best thing is I now have a great work/life balance and couldn’t be happier.
Alison Ramsden
My first job was at Barclays. When I joined the graduate scheme in 1985 I was only planning on staying about five years to get a good grounding in business management – twenty-five years later and I’m still here! At the moment I’m responsible for leading a team which manages the Premier/Mass Affluent customer segment and we have to orchestrate change right across UKRB. It’s tricky to say what I enjoy most. I love getting stuck into developing strategies that could shape the bank’s future. But at the same time I also love talking to customers and hearing what they have to say, it really energies me. To anyone just starting out, I’d tell them to keep an eye out for development opportunities because they always seem to crop up when you’re least expecting them.
