There's no such thing as a "girl" job

I'm still home alone with the kids and being Christmassed to death with repeated screenings of the film Nativity! It was good the first time round, but is slightly losing its lustre. The baby has been waking up several times in the night with teething pains as per usual. I am reckoning about one to two weeks of fretful nights per tooth at the present rate. He won't let me look in his mouth to check how many have come up, but I think I spotted two back ones coming through when he said an enthusiastic 'eh oh' outside the Teletubbies display at the local shopping centre the other day [I had foolishly ventured out as daughter one got a Primark voucher for Christmas. Chaos reigned as the baby wanted to clear all the shelves, daughter one deliberated very, very slowly over a pair of standard shoes and daughter two tried on massive glittery high heeled monstrosities declaring them to be perfect school shoes].
The other night the baby woke earlier than usual in the evening. Just as I was about to get my pizza out of the oven - so he sat with me while I had it and then fell asleep, meaning I couldn't manoeuvre to get the remote control. I was stuck watching some really depressing end of the year show with David Walliams making hopeless attempts at humour while really good people like David Mitchell and Eddie Izzard were reduced to bit part players. The whole thing was hosted by Jimmy Carr, the Jeremy Clarkson of "comedians". This joyous event was followed by Alan Carr with guests Jedward who are more infantile than the baby and much, much more annoying. I retired to bed feeling thoroughly depressed only to read a report the next day about how girls' top career choice is hairdressing and beauty and that they consider engineering and science "boy" jobs. The younger the girls were the more likely they were to believe in the boy/girl job idea. It's like we have gone into reverse since I grew up. I had a huge rant to the girls about how women have fought to break down the idea that there are boy and girl jobs.
Daughter two, who is fairly into hairdressing and nail "art" [she did me a two-tone nail invention only the other day], said she only liked them because they are about dressing up and "experimenting". She fully intends to be an astronaut, she assured me [I told her it was all about opening up her choices not telling her what to do. It completely went over her head]. Daughter one rolled her eyes and went back to watching Nativity! Daughter three was on a sleepover at her grandmother's and missed out on the fun. The baby actually fell asleep [must remember to do a rant every bedtime]...
