Ballet exam

Ballet exam

It was bonkers daughter's ballet exam this weekend. I think I am a very bad parent as I really don't take this very seriously. For her ballet teacher, however, there is no room for such irresponsible parents. To be fair, it was mother's day and big girl daughter had a fit when she realised she couldn't come, but we still managed to get there on time. I know I probably should have devoted more time to the ballet bun, but bonkers daughter decided to make a lake and pirate ship in the morning, complete with blue dye and guinea pig shavings for that authentic sea touch. So, all in all, after the mother's day cards and a lovely poem from rebel daughter about how irreplacable I am [how many more years can this adoration last - two, three, tops?] and how I clean up everyone's mess and the pirate scenario, we had about 20 minutes to get ready. I plastered the bonkers one's head with gel and did my best imitation of a bun, but she has a short fringe which refuses to go into a bun. I knew the pink tights had a hole in, but had sewn this up and reckoned the ballet skirt would cover it and I was feeling rather smug as I had actually remembered to wash the tights.
However...by the time we got to ballet, the tights had sprung another hole in the crotch area. Again, I reasoned, it would be hidden by the skirt. "That skirt's a bit on the short side," said her teacher. In fact, it was big girl daughter's skirt. I have no idea where the bonkers one's skirt is. It also had a big greasy stain on it. Oops. Her teacher changed it for one she had brought just in case. In so doing, her eyes alighted on the hole in the tights. "I thought I told mums to buy new tights for the exam," she said. Now, my reasoning was that the proper ballet tights cost £7.99 and for half an hour's exam this was not really cost effective since she already had some. Plus the tights shop is in either one of the two neighbouring town and one of the shops is only open on odd afternoons. On top of this, the purchase of ballet tights has not been top of my priority list. I have two jobs, three children, we have just buried the cat and I am 29 weeks pregnant. The ballet teacher sent out another mum to fetch some spare tights while I quickly redid the bun, knowing that was going to be next on the check list. I think bonkers daughter did well at the exam so she is expecting at least a pass. I, on the other hand, have failed outright.
Meanwhile, bonkers daughter, after saying that she wanted to go to "the easy" secondary school, has now decided that she is going to "stage school", which I think she envisages as some sort of utopia with no maths.
