Parents' evening

Yesterday was parents' evening, which is becoming an almost epic affair the more children we have. Also, practically every small member of the family had some sort of affliction. Rebel daughter has a permanent limp. I took her to the GP before sports day earlier in the week and he said her limping was growing pains [as suspected]. She had been hoping to be given an excuse to sit out sports day, but she was just advised to take painkillers and do warm-up exercises. She put in a valiant effort for the 100 metres and skipping races, but hobbled back to her seat so I pleaded for her to be let off the long-distance race. By yesterday, I found her crawling to the bathroom so I decided enough was enough and she needed some serious rest. Big girl daughter has a cold, which she thinks is fairly serious. She came into out room at 1am to announce it and then curled up on the floor, refusing to move. Bonkers daughter has a possible infected tummy button after she excavated some fluff with a pen. The baby is waking every hour or so in the night due to wind.
The night shift when you are breastfeeding must be one of life's loneliest experiences. You are barely awake [and trying very hard to stay that way], the baby is crying and kicking you in protest at the wind and your partner is oblivious to it all, mainly because there is not much he can do except provide sparkling conversation. I almost look forward to the morning because I somehow feel less tired when I am doing the school run as there is some sense of accomplishment involved.
On the bright side, there are only two or so months until it all gets easier [at least I think so, if memory serves] and Spain are through to the World Cup final [my partner is Spanish...]. The World Cup has figured in some of the more memorable parts of my life. This time round it will be mostly remembered for sleep deprivation. I think I would be less tired if I had spent 90 minutes charging around a football pitch...
