Youngsters frightened when adults drink alcohol

Nearly one third of children say they feel 'scared' when they see adults drinking alcohol, a survey by Childwise has revealed.
The poll showed half of children aged 10 to 14 had seen their parents drunk - 30% admitted it made them feel scared.
The survey was carried out on behalf of BBC1's Newsround for a special report to be screened today exploring the impact of adult drinking on youngsters.
Of the 1,234 children who took part in the poll, 80% said they noticed a change in adults when they had been drinking alcohol.
Nearly one in five (16%) told the poll adults became 'angry and aggressive' after downing alcohol, but nearly half said they weren't bothered by adults drinking.  Another fifth said adults became 'happy and funny' when they drank.
Nearly a quarter said they thought drink made adults 'act stupid or silly', 19% said adults acted 'strange or different', and 18% said adults under the influence 'became loud and swore' .
Rosemary Duff, research director for Childwise, warned the survey showed action needed to be taken on binge-drinking.
She said the fact that half of the youngsters said they weren't bothered by drunkeness showed drinking had 'become ingrained' in culture.
''Unless we do something, things aren't going to get any better,'' she said.  ''Quite possibly, they could get worse.
''Each generation takes the cues from their parents, and if their parents are drinking more it makes it easier for them to drink more.''
One fifth of the children polled said they would not drink when they were older.  One in six said they would drink alcohol when they were older, but 17% of them said they would do so in moderation.
