Government to extend free childcare for poorer families
The Government is to announce today that two year olds from poorer families will receive the 15 hours free early years educational entitlement which all three and four year olds currently receive.
The move has been welcomed by childcare experts.
Anand Shukla, Acting Chief Executive of Daycare Trust, said: “Daycare Trust warmly welcomes today’s announcement. We are delighted to see the Government acknowledge the importance of investing in early years. There is overwhelming evidence that investing in the first years of a child’s life has the potential to transform their future, yet spending on early years education and care is tiny in comparison to secondary and higher education budgets.
This news will also come as a great relief to many parents of two year olds, currently burdened with the high cost of childcare in the UK- with recent research showing parents in the UK pay more than any other OECD country."
