Jas Bhogal is a Partner in Harper James’ corporate team. Before joining Harper James, Jas had come to a crossroads in her career – she had recently been made redundant by her employer while expecting her second child and had doubts about being able to balance the progression of her legal career with being a hands-on mum of two. She had even considered taking a step back from her career entirely.

Harper James’ Founder and CEO, Toby Harper, and Jas had previously worked together at a venture capital firm, so when he was setting up the business in 2014, making the call to bring Jas on board was naturally the next step.

This opportunity to continue her career came with a crucial component that was almost unheard of in the legal industry and beyond at the time – working from home. The opportunity to work from home enabled Jas to continue doing what she loved while being the mother she wanted to be for her children.

Early adopters

Since day one, Harper James, who won this year’s WM People Award for Best SME, has always been ahead of the curve with their flexible and remote working policies, with almost all of their staff working in hybrid or remote roles since being founded in 2014. In the nine years since she joined Harper James, Jas has worked entirely from home (with the option to come into its Birmingham-based head office), giving her the freedom and flexibility to have a flourishing legal career and be a present mum, without the burden of having to choose between the two.

“I’ve been able to achieve the career I’ve always wanted – I haven’t become stagnant; my career hasn’t stood still. I started at Harper James working as a freelance solicitor for Toby when it was just the two of us, and now I’m a Partner in the firm and I manage a team of amazing junior and senior-level lawyers,” says Jas. “It’s been nine years since I got the call from Toby to join Harper James and I haven’t looked back since.”

Although she works predominantly from home, Jas says that this doesn’t affect the relationships she has with her team and other colleagues across the business. “I see most of my colleagues and team maybe a handful of times throughout the year, but they are some of my best friends. Although we work remotely, we still work together collaboratively and communicate with each other every day,” she states.

Jas says she has felt supported by Toby and the wider Harper James team from the very start and she is very grateful to have been able to provide a vast array of clients with high quality advice and support her team, without that coming at the cost of raising her family.
