Campaign launches to get employers to give interview feedback

Job Interview

A national campaign is being launched today to get employers to share feedback with candidates after a face-to-face interview.

The student and graduate careers app Debut is launching its #FightForFeedback campaign, which will include a petition to government and a white paper.

The campaign is backed by employers, including 02, Fujitsu, Network Rail, the FDM Group and Capgemini.

Research undertaken by Debut shows that four in five candidates who have previously attended a face-to-face interview had not received feedback from the employer.

It also showed that the average cost of attending a face-to-face interview for the interviewee is £41, which can include travel, new clothes, dry-cleaning, but excludes annual leave from their current employer.

Some 51 percent of people said they also had to take a day’s annual leave to attend a face-to-face interview.

The amount of time the candidates spend preparing for a face-to-face interview is anywhere between 30 minutes to five or more hours.

When asked how candidates would like to receive feedback, their main preference was email (42%). Candidates said they would least prefer to receive feedback via post, video call and text message.

According to candidates, it is reasonable to expect employers to share feedback within 48 hours (41%), followed by a working week (34%) – fewer people demanded feedback within 24 hours (21%).

Charlie Taylor, CEO & Founder of Debut, said: Feedback is powerful, and anyone who takes the time to attend an interview is entitled to it.

“There has been a real shift in the role played by the candidate and the employer during an interview in the last decade, with candidates moving into the ascendency and the panel grilling being replaced by the chemistry session approach. It’s now time that employers saw the holistic value in giving feedback – it will have a positive impact on the quality of candidates in the future; it will cut down the time it takes to find the right person, and eventually the UK workforce will benefit as more people will be in employment.”
