Can an employer change a job from full time to part time after interview?

I have interviewed for a permanent job advertised as 40 hours. This was reiterated at interview and I need 40 hours. I have heard that the employer may have changed their mind and may want a part-time worker at 25 hours a week. Can they do this after advertising and interviewing?

Legally they can change the job spec. There isn’t anything out there about the interview stage other than around you can’t discriminate for the obvious reasons – disability/ family & marriage status and personal details. If they haven’t made an offer in writing then there isn’t a lot that can be done.

But what happens if it is in writing, in the job description? Can something be done?

Do you mean that the job description when you applied specified full time? If so, you can try to negotiate at interview for reduced hours, but they would not have to give them to you. Even when a day one right to request flexible working comes in in April, it is only a right to request. There are eight fairly general grounds that an employer can use for turning down a request.
