What a year it has been! No-one could have anticipated the challenges we would all face. Yet, despite everything, AWE has been keeping its on-site operations going throughout to ensure we deliver our mission for the Ministry of Defence: to support the defence and security of the UK. Around half of our people have been continuously working on our sites, adapting to the new COVID-secure arrangements that were put in place to keep everyone safe. At the same time, we have upscaled IT and introduced innovative technical solutions to enable the other half of the company to work safely and effectively from home.
Add to that, getting ready to develop and produce a replacement warhead for Trident, the UK’s ultimate deterrent; clearing much of our two main sites to make way for a state-of-the-art centralised campus environment and modern manufacturing facilities; we are also transitioning to government ownership as a Non Departmental Public Body. It has been an exciting time here at AWE over the past year – and there are more exciting times ahead……
To keep on track with our ambitious, but essential, plans, we’re going to need to attract and retain the very best people out there, from all demographic segments. We realised long ago that greater diversity of people and thought leads to a better working environment, greater innovations, better decisions, and ultimately better outcomes for everyone. Given our industry sector and geographical proximity to other big-name employers, attraction and retention are always going to be a challenge, but it’s a challenge we are rising to.
For more than half a decade we have invested in developing young people though our graduate and award-winning apprentice programmes. We also recruit several hundred people each year, ranging from those just starting out in their careers to industry experts, and many more in between.
We are now excited to launch our first Career Returners Programme, which is designed to support experienced professionals return to their field following a career break. It is aimed primarily at women who’ve taken time out to bring up children but it is open to anyone who’s taken a break from their career for two years or more.
We recognise and value the transferable skills you will have gained while you’ve been away from the workplace, and we can give you the opportunity to put them into practice and re-start your career with one of the exciting opportunities at AWE.
We understand that when you’ve been away from work for some time it can be a bit daunting getting back into the swing of the job market and starting with a new company. We have hundreds of career returners at AWE, including our CEO and Managing Director and our Executive HR Director, so you’re in good company and you’ll get all the support you need from us: a comprehensive induction to AWE; exemplary training for the job you’re going to do; support from your new team to show you ‘the ropes’; and you’ll also be buddied up with a colleague who’s also a career returner and who knows exactly what it feels like to come back to work after a lengthy period away.
We also understand that returning to work and juggling home/family commitments can be a challenge. With our modern approach to ways of working, you’ll be given flexibility around where, when and how you work, dependant on what you’re doing, and you’ll have the opportunity to choose full or part-time hours to fit around your family.
If you are interested in the work we do and have had some experience in the roles available, you will likely be a good fit for AWE.
So, if you like what you’ve read and want to find out more about our Career Returners’ programme, then check out the opportunities below.
