But for an applicant a job application form can feel a bit cold. It’s more difficult to convey your enthusiasm and aptitude for a role when you’re constrained by a form. The first of our job application form top tips is to read the instructions carefully before you start. Make sure you have time to meet the application deadline, that you understand how to submit the form and whether there are any word count or character limits for each answer.
Check whether you need to upload any documents alongside the form and have them ready.
Have the job description next to you as you fill in the job application form and make sure you include phrases from it as you work through the details. Some employers even use online tools to assess applications, so the more your form matches their requirements, the better.
You’ll often need to send your CV in alongside the job application form, and any discrepancies between the two could raise questions that put you out of the running. So make sure all your dates, job titles and responsibilities tally up.
Type your answers rather than hand-writing wherever possible. It’s a good idea to write out each answer in Word or Google Docs and spell check it before pasting into the form. That way you’ll have the details for future applications too.
Never leave a question unanswered. It will appear suspicious, even if it isn’t! Find some way to provide a response, even if it’s only a sentence or two.
