It’s increasingly common for employers to vet their job applicants by getting them to complete a job application form. It’s a quick way to weed out people that don’t match the job description. But for an applicant a job application form can feel a bit cold. It’s more difficult to convey your enthusiasm and aptitude for a role when you’re constrained by a form. Read on for our job application form top tips, and make sure you get the attention you deserve.

1. Follow the rules

The first of our job application form top tips is to read the instructions carefully before you start. Make sure you have time to meet the application deadline, that you understand how to submit the form and whether there are any word count or character limits for each answer.

Check whether you need to upload any documents alongside the form and have them ready.

2. Match the job description

Have the job description next to you as you fill in the job application form and make sure you include phrases from it as you work through the details. Some employers even use online tools to assess applications, so the more your form matches their requirements, the better.

3. Match your CV

You’ll often need to send your CV in alongside the job application form, and any discrepancies between the two could raise questions that put you out of the running. So make sure all your dates, job titles and responsibilities tally up.

4. Save your answers

Type your answers rather than hand-writing wherever possible. It’s a good idea to write out each answer in Word or Google Docs and spell check it before pasting into the form. That way you’ll have the details for future applications too.

5. Don’t leave blanks

Never leave a question unanswered. It will appear suspicious, even if it isn’t! Find some way to provide a response, even if it’s only a sentence or two.

6. Take every opportunity to promote yourself

Many job application forms are very functional and give you little opportunity to be descriptive. Common job application questions focus on your desired salary and benefits, working hours, location etc., so it’s difficult to convey any personality.

For example, if there’s a question asking about where you learned about the job or why you’re interested, you can add a few sentences explaining your motivation for applying. But many application forms are very factual, so you may not need too much support – just stick to the details. Remember that application forms are focused on shortlisting candidates, while an interview is more about interpersonal skills and team fit.

8. Check before sending

Read through the entire job application form before sending it off. An error could mean you’re rejected instantly. If possible, get a friend to check it over too. Make sure you’ve included all your contact details too, ready to hear back about your interview slot!
