Job market trends for 2022

CV Guru Emma Alkirwi has some advice on current labour market trends and how you can benefit from them.

Hidden jobs

The job market changes every year, but the last few years have seen some radical shifts take place. Luckily for you, the current trends seem to favour jobseekers. Are you on the lookout for a new job next year, or considering dipping your toes into the market? Here are the key job market trends for 2022 to keep an eye on.

1) There are more vacancies than ever before

Even though furlough ended recently, there are less unemployed people per vacancy than in any time over the 40 years.
A recent article in The Independent states many industries – from driving instructors to prison officers and forklift drivers – are struggling with staff shortages.

That isn’t even considering sectors like hospitality, who rely on seasonal staff from other countries. Both the pandemic and Brexit have had a huge impact on workers coming into the UK. These businesses have had to increase salaries and improve benefits to fill more vacancies than usual.

So, if you’re looking for a new position in any of these industries – and have some experience to your name – you are likely to be seen favourably by employers.

2) Skills shortages offer opportunities – and restrictions

There is no hiding from it – there is a massive skills shortage when it comes to technology. Jobseekers with IT, cyber security and digital backgrounds are more in demand than ever. That means that to secure talent, job offers need to be really attractive. If you have this kind of experience, employers will be desperate to secure you! Make sure you have a tailored CV for the position that highlights your skills. You are sure to stand out in the applicant pool.

But this does mean that employers are looking for highly experienced people. So it’s getting harder for graduates, career switchers or people with employment gaps to break into these roles – unless companies are willing to invest in their training and development.

Our main advice is: don’t be put off applying for roles in these industries! Make yourself stand out with qualifications from organisations like Google and Microsoft. The more you build up your knowledge and skills, the more you are setting yourself up for future success.

3) Virtual interviews are becoming the norm

The ability to work online exploded over the past two years due to necessity. It seems clear now that hybrid working is going to stay popular for the foreseeable future.

Alongside remote working, online interviews and presentations have become more and more popular. Not only are they convenient, but they widen the talent pool for employers. So even as we move into 2022, the ability to speak with confidence on camera remains critical.

To help you wow your interviewer, we are partnering with Kyle Murtagh, a presentation skills trainer and award-winning public speaker. Kyle can teach you the skills you need to present with confidence online. Find out more about Kyle’s services here.

4) Employees expect flexibility

The last two years have created a shift in what people expect from their employers. Jobseekers want to join a company that provide a good work-life balance.

Flexible hours, continued remote working and even a shorter working week are all on the priority list. This is particularly important for working parents, and those with dependents or responsibilities.

This makes sense for employers too! The happier you keep your staff, the more likely they are to stay with you long term.

Hopefully this means the positions you are applying for will come with more favourable conditions. Make sure you find out about the ones that are dealbreakers for you as early in the process as you can.

In summary: after a few rollercoaster years with a lot of ups and downs, the future is bright for people seeking a new job in 2022.
