Does my job need to be advertised externally?

I worked full time in my current role 16 years ago before having my family. After maternity I went part time (without being interviewed). I am currently covering maternity leave and the lady has decided not to return to work.  I have asked to keep the maternity cover and carry on working full time. Do they have to advertise this job or can I just been transferred back to a full-time member of staff?

There’s no legal obligation for roles to be advertised whether internally or externally. However, for reasons of best practice and fairness companies often do advertise roles.

Depending on the size of your team the company may wish to advertise the role to enable others to apply. However, having covered the position yourself, this may put you in a stronger position – although there are no guarantees.
