Job Details

St Albans is a unique English Cathedral City with a colourful history which can be seen in the Roman remains and variety of beautiful architecture, heritage sites and conservation areas. Set within green belt, off the M25, A1M and M1, the District includes a cathedral, historic city centre and charming villages. Our offices are in the city centre near to the station (London St Pancras 20 minutes), shops and restaurants. In short, it is a great place to live and work.

In this post, you will undertake a variety of building surveys to report, analyse and rectify complex repairs and building defect issues. You will take full responsibility for managing projects from the start to final delivery working on your own initiative and with minimal supervision. This will include budget management, preparing specifications, drawings, the procurement of contracts, supervision of remedial, programmed and cyclical maintenance programmes to the Council’s housing stock.

You must have a degree in Building Surveying (or equivalent work experience in a similar role with an HNC/HND in Building Surveying, or Construction related subject) together with detailed working knowledge on a wide range of areas including building defects and their remedies (including damp, subsidence etc). You may also take part in the “Out of Hours” Standby rota which operates for which an additional allowance would be payable.

Working knowledge of housing related law and best practice in relation to repairs, maintenance and improvements including the Housing Grants relevant legislation, Construction and Regeneration Act and CDM Regulations 2015 is essential for this post.  The post is politically restricted and subject to a Basic Disclosure Check.

Benefits include 26 days annual leave, essential user car allowance or lease car, flexible working options (including home working), access to staff parking, pension scheme, reimbursement of professional fees, learning and development opportunities, leisure and travel discounts and a number of other benefits that are available.

Closing date for applications: 20 January 2019.

Improve your lifestyle, enjoy more quality time and
a better Work Life Balance

Working at the Council can be very rewarding. Our services affect the daily lives of people in our community in many different ways, and our staff feel like they’re making a difference to people’s lives, whilst working in a positive and flexible environment.

We can offer you the opportunity to try something new or take your career to the next level. We are looking for talented, enthusiastic people who want to take on a job and really make it their own. You can gain a wide range of knowledge, skills and experience with us and develop to your full potential.

Many people still face the challenges  of balancing work and home life. For many of our employees today—both male and female—their daily lives involve a host of family and other personal responsibilities and interests.

The Council recognises the importance of finding this balance and offers a range of different programs and initiatives, such as flexi-time flexible working arrangements in the form of part-time, job-share, compressed hours, full and partial home working. These are available across a range of roles from administrative level to senior specialist roles.
We also have a casual register of people looking to work flexibly and when needed to provide support at peak times during the year.

This includes covering local elections, supporting key events held within the district and covering holidays and other absences.

We also offer a range of benefits including childcare voucher scheme, train season ticket loan/discount, health initiatives and a leisure discount scheme. And these are just some of the many benefits you’ll receive when you join us.
