Job Details

Global Witness are seeking a Campaigner for our Climate Change Team, to play a key role in our UK-based climate campaign.

About us

Global Witness protects human rights and the environment by fearlessly confronting corruption and challenging the systems that enable it. We’ve been creating change for over 20 years, from alerting the world to blood diamonds to halting forest destruction deals.

With a renewed climate change focus, we aim to make a large contribution to the worldwide fight against climate breakdown.

We are looking for an experienced Campaigner to work within our Climate Team on an interim basis.

About the role

As a Campaigner on our Climate Change Team, you’ll play a pivotal role in Global Witness’ UK climate change campaign, aimed at bringing about a managed and just decline of fossil fuel production in the UK. With a particular focus on North Sea oil and gas extraction, and a phase out of UK government subsidies for fossil fuels, you’ll build long-term alliances – both inside formal politics and outside it - to achieve the campaign’s aims.

In order to keep global temperatures from rising beyond the crucial limit of 1.5c above pre-industrial levels, there must be a phase of out of fossil fuel subsidies and a managed decline of fossil fuel extraction globally. This has to be done through a just transition for workers, communities and others to avoid people losing out as economies decarbonise. Several countries across the world are beginning to phase out new fossil fuel extraction – our campaign is focused on moving the UK towards these goals.

About you

You’re a dynamic campaigner with deep knowledge of the UK’s political landscape – both in Westminster and beyond and with the stamina and determination to take on a campaign with ambitious, world-changing aims.

You’ll have experience of delivering successful campaigns in the UK, knowledge and experience of how to influence and work with UK politicians, and a keen sense of how to capitalise on political and media opportunities.

As a self-starter you’ll have the ideas and creative thinking to make this unique campaign a success.

Working for us

We aim to be a diverse and inclusive place to work. We value new perspectives, original ideas and different ways of working. We believe that diverse views and experiences improve the way we do our work. We do our best to make our jobs accessible to all regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation or identity.

We offer an excellent benefits package including a competitive salary and 25 days holiday (exc. Bank holidays), pension, private medical insurance and flexible working arrangements.

This role is based in London, UK with occasional travel overseas.

How to apply

When you are ready to apply please send in your CV (maximum 3 pages) and a concise covering letter (maximum 2 pages) which tells us why you’d be a great fit for this role to the email address below with Campaigner, Climate Change in the subject heading and where you saw the role advertised by 5pm GMT Monday 4 March 2019.

Company

We want justice for those disproportionately affected by the climate crisis: people in the global south, indigenous communities and communities of colour, women and younger generations. We want corporations to respect the planet and human rights, governments to protect and listen to their citizens, and the online world to be free from misinformation and hate.
