The Just Recruitment Group are currently recruiting for a Part Time Proofreader for their prestigious client based in the Essex area.
To form part of Quality Assurance (QA) and work closely with Client Services (CS) and the Studio. The role of proofreader is to ensure that material is clear, consistent, complete, credible, well written, grammatically correct and accessible; to take the initial material or copy and make it ready for publication or digital dissemination whilst adhering to brand consistency.
Responsibilites of the role include (but are not limited to):
• Read and evaluate written text, correcting spelling mistakes, grammar, typographical and
brand errors
• Compare typeset proofs against original copy to identify errors or omissions.
• Stay abreast of grammatical development as well as new terminologies in English.
• Maintain awareness of new words or phrases coming into popular usage with a view to
ensuring they are appropriate.
• Sub-edit text supplied by CS to ensure consistent house style.
• Check that CS have provided all the required materials and paperwork.
• Proofread work from the Studio e.g. emails, mailers, flyers and brochures.
• Liaise with CS directly to clarify or resolve queries, e.g. grammatical inconsistencies relating
to style and text choice. Discuss and resolve misinterpretations and any potentially libellous
material.
• Work with the QA team according to the work in progress list.
• Work with publishing systems, digital platforms and Synergist (our administrative software –
training will be given), as well as the internet and paper manuscripts.
• Ensure that illustrations are correctly captioned and referred to in the text.
• Producing or working to a style checklist to ensure consistency in hyphenation,
capitalisation, formatting of references, etc.
• Checking online work (websites, video, etc) for text.
• Rephrase written text to ensure document structure and content are consistent.
• Analyse documents to ensure chapter titles match list of contents.
• Ensure page numbers are in the right order and not repeated or omitted.
• Liaising with CS and the Studio, keeping them up-to-date with progress.
• Provide copy for clients to describe places and developments.
• Memorise and understand brand guidelines.
Experience required:
• Minimum of two years’ experience proofreading or editing written content.
• Knowledge of standard proofreading practices, procedures and
concepts.
• A thorough knowledge of English language including a high
level of skill in written English, including spelling, grammar and
punctuations.
• Concentration, accuracy and great attention to detail.
• Quick reader with the ability to read and edit quickly without
sacrificing quality.
• Working extensively on digital content.
• Excellent computer skills, including the Microsoft suite and
Adobe Acrobat.
• Use of Apple Macs.
Technical skills:
• Copy-editing and on-screen editing skills.
• Grammar and spelling.
The ideal candidate will posses the following skill set:
• A scrupulous approach to detail and methodical working style.
• The motivation to work on your own and to meet tight
deadlines.
• Ability to stay focused throughout an entire document which
may be long and technical.
• Good judgement to gauge which changes are necessary.
• Familiarity with the production process of documents.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, to build working relationships with
colleagues.
• Must be able to multitask – manage and prioritise multiple
projects at once
