Job title:  Fundraising Manager
Responsible to: Chief Executive Officer
Salary: £35,372 – £37,904  per annum dependent on experience. Applicants wishing to work part-time considered.
Benefits: 36 paid holiday days per year inclusive of bank holidays, plus employer contribution to pension after successful completion of probationary period.
Contract: Full-time (35 hours a week), office based, maternity cover, nine months with potential for extension.

ABOUT US:

Genetic Alliance UK is the national charity working to improve the lives of patients and families affected by all types of genetic, rare and undiagnosed conditions. We are a membership organisation made up of over 200 patient groups and we aim to upskill our members, bring knowledge and advice, and unify their voice around key policy issues that affect the patient community. We are experts in health policy and have a team of in-house academics who conduct psychosocial and economic research into the effects of living with genetic, rare and undiagnosed conditions. We also actively support research and innovation across the field of genetic medicine, and raise awareness within the wider public. We have two long-standing projects:

Rare Disease UK a campaign established to push for the creation and implementation for the UK Strategy for Rare Diseases. Rare Disease UK is also the official organiser of the international health awareness campaign, Rare Disease Day, for the UK.

SWAN UK (syndromes without a name), the only dedicated support network in the UK for families that have a child or young adult with an undiagnosed genetic condition.

THE ROLE:

We are seeking an energetic and creative individual with a proven track record in fundraising. This is an exciting time to join Genetic Alliance UK as we implement our new . This maternity-cover post offers the right applicant a fantastic opportunity to lead on fundraising for our organisation and, dependent on business need and on target income generation, the post could be extended and made permanent. Implementing our new fundraising strategy you will lead income generation, including corporate relationships, trusts and foundations and community fundraising and you will line-manage the Trusts Officer and Fundraising Officer. Working cross-departmentally you will play a leading role in securing funding for our policy work, research and our long-standing projects SWAN UK and Rare Disease UK, as well as playing an active role in our cross departmental and highly commended Communications Team. You will also be supporting our national campaigns Rare Disease Day and Undiagnosed Children’s Day, and work with a fundraising consultant to support large multi-year funding bids.

This creative and varied role offers an ambitious Fundraising Manager the chance to take the next step in their career in a supportive team, with realistic and achievable fundraising targets and a clear plan. There will be a substantial handover period and a set plan in place to make the transition as smooth as possible.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead on income generation across voluntary, corporate, trusts and foundations, sales and business services.
  • Manage the fundraising budget and provide sign off for expenses for the Fundraising Team.
  • Provide leadership and line management for the Fundraising Team.
  • Maintain and create business partnerships/relationships, including face to face meetings and organising engagement events and activities.
  • Lead on income generation around two national campaigns; Rare Disease Day and Undiagnosed Children’s Day.
  • Contribute to quarterly financial reports to the Board of Trustees and to the Finance and Governance Committee.
  • Provide expertise and sign-off to risk assessments, budgeting and insurance for fundraising events in aid of the charity.
  • Keep up-to-date with changes in fundraising legislation and ensure regulatory compliance and legality of all fundraising activities
  • Play an active role in the Communications Team, shaping the way we communicate fundraising messages to encourage participation and leading on website developments and changes for fundraising.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Keep abreast of policy and research developments through regular contact with the Policy and Research Teams.
  • Attend regular meetings such as Parliamentary receptions, organising two industry events, All Party Parliamentary Group activities and any other events where our supporters will be present.
  • Give one to one support, deliver presentations or provide training on fundraising for our patient organisations and other agencies when required.

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate and/or professional qualification in fundraising

ESSENTIAL QUALITIES, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of two year’s demonstrable experience in an income generation role.
  • Experience of working in business development or with corporate partnerships, providing fantastic relationship management.
  • Experience of managing staff or volunteers to achieve set outcomes.
  • Event organising experience, including budgeting, planning, managing bookings, administration, financial management and advertising.
  • Experience of managing a budget and assessing financial viability, and measuring the return on investment and the impact of activities.
  • Ability to build relationships with people from a range of backgrounds and levels of seniority.
  • Excellent record keeping, administration and organisational skills.
  • Experience of utilising different communication tools for the purposes of income generation.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and in person.
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
  • A can-do attitude and strategic thinker that works with enthusiasm and creativity.
  • A logical and organised approach to work.
  • Ability to meet agreed deadlines, prioritise workload and maximise the use of time.
  • Interest in healthcare, genetics and rare disease.
  • A commitment to the aims and objectives of Genetic Alliance UK.

DESIRABLE QUALITIES, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience of using Salesforce or a similar CRM.
  • An interest in design and web development.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

To be able to work occasional evenings and weekends, and longer hours as required during busier periods. Willing to undertake occasional travel in the UK.
