UK Government Investments (UKGI) is a government-owned company wholly owned by HM Treasury and is the UK Government’s centre of excellence in corporate finance and corporate governance.  It operates as an arm’s length body (ALB) of HM Treasury, working across government on some of its most interesting and complex financial and commercial tasks.  It works on the boundary of the public and private sectors, with regular interaction with Ministers, Parliament and Whitehall Departments providing expertise in asset sales; interventions; ALB set-up, incubation and governance; market intelligence and analysis; transaction execution; and larger scale corporate negotiations.

We are looking for an Assistant Director to join the Special Situations Group and lead on the provision of specialist restructuring advice to Government Ministers and Departments. Within this role, you will lead the day-to-day oversight of project work and often take a leading role in coordinating HM Government’s response to a distressed situation. You will undertake financial and commercial analysis and use this to develop advice for senior officials and Ministers.  Where necessary, work will be more hands-on, leading on the structuring of financial interventions and/or contingency plans.

We frequently work with assets of significant complexity and national profile, and you will have the opportunity to make a substantial impact as an important part of the team’s daily work. Accordingly, you will have an experienced background in financial restructuring, effective communication skills and be able to engage convincingly with a range of senior stakeholders.

In this role, you will be expected to work with colleagues across Whitehall to identify financially distressed sectors within the economy and advise Government to take an interest; analyse a range of financial and non-financial information to determine the impact to Government; provide input to the cross-Whitehall design of relevant policies and procedures; advising on preparation of contingency plans in areas where there are concerns regarding a supplier’s financial sustainability, and handling multiple cases and project teams, ensuring that senior individuals within UKGI and Other Government Departments are engaged and briefed on key issues.

Positions in UKGI advertised externally are also open to civil servants on a secondment basis.  For the duration of the secondment, staff will remain on the terms and conditions of their parent department.  A typical secondment period is two years.

This post is available on a full time, part time or job share basis, and to those interested in flexible working hours.

Individuals appointed to UKGI will be subject to National Security Vetting. To allow for meaningful checks to be carried out applicants will normally need to have lived in the UK for at least the past 5 years. A lack of UK residency in itself is not necessarily a bar to security clearance but the Department will need to consider on a case by case basis using all information that can be obtained following a successful application.
