Are you a Hydrographic Surveyor or have a qualification in marine science with a major hydrographic survey component? Would you like to work as part of a small but busy team to deliver a national seabed mapping programme?

We are searching for a Hydrography Lead to help provide hydrographic technical support to ensure the successful development and delivery of the UK Civil Hydrography Programme (CHP) and other survey and collaborative initiatives. 


You will have the chance to liaise with stakeholders and partners throughout the MCA and industry, feeding into the UK’s hydrographic survey strategy. 

Role Responsibilities 

As part of your role, you will be required to: 
 

  • Liaise with MCA CHP contractors to monitor all hydrographic contractual technical requirements to ensure successful delivery of the CHP including monitoring data acquisition, undertaking vessel and office visits to check that surveys are compliant with the MCA Survey specification, liaising with the MCA Contractors and/or UKHO as necessary to resolve any issues/queries.

  • Monitor the hydrographic technical aspects of the CHP’s Routine Resurvey Programme, analyse the reports, discuss and review areas in collaboration with the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO), feeding in to the annual survey programme

  • Take ownership of all technical queries to successful resolution, liaising with all stakeholders as necessary, including trouble-shooting problematic datasets and tracking back to the source where appropriate

  • Utilise GIS-based tools to inform CHP operations 
  • Support the analysis and development of survey areas, liaising with stakeholders where necessary

  • Provide the main point of contact for Offshore Renewable Energy Installation (OREI) developers regarding the hydrographic requirements of MGN371.

  • Contribute to the MCA’s Civil Hydrography Annual Seminar (CHAS) and the production of the CHP’s Annual Yearbook

  • Represent the MCA on relevant fora and specialist working groups

  • Support the development and delivery of collaborative and third party funded seabed mapping projects in order to augment national survey effort, providing hydrographic survey support and expertise


About You 

To be considered for this role you will need to be a IHO/FIG Category A accredited hydrographic surveyor or qualified with an Honours degree in a relevant marine science related discipline with a post-graduate qualification in marine science with a major hydrographic surveying component. You will also need field experience of offshore hydrographic survey operations including bathymetric data gathering. We want you to use this experience and expertise to provide guidance to contractors, stakeholders and colleagues. You will have experience of monitoring hydrographic technical survey requirements to successful delivery, providing guidance and robust recommendations to stakeholders. 

You are someone who loves to work closely with others and can express yourself in a confident and concise manner. We would love to attract someone with fantastic communication skills and the ability to work with complex information. You will be able to deal with technical queries and provide thorough and helpful resolutions.

Qualifications

IHO/FIG Category A accredited hydrographic surveyor 

OR 

Honours degree in a relevant marine science related discipline and a post-graduate qualification in marine science with a major hydrographic surveying component. 

These must be accompanied with: 

Field experience (the level of knowledge required would not usually be gained in less than 2-4 years) of offshore hydrographic survey operations including bathymetric data gathering 

and 

A working knowledge of GIS
