Residential Worker, Action for Children

Location: Eastwood, Glasgow

Job Type: Permanent, Part-Time or Full Time, Between 20 and 37 Hours

Hours: Either day or waking night shifts (see below)

Salary: Circa £21,500 (plus sleepover bonus, up to 7 weeks paid annual leave)

How does AFC work?

Action for Children does what's right, does what's needed and does what works for children in the UK. Every year, our team changes the lives of 310,000 children, young people and families.

As a Residential Worker you will be working across Stoneside Short Breaks Service which provides a service throughout the year to upwards of 35 families and our residential services that currently provides long term support for three young people. Our respite service accommodates maximum 4 young people at any one time who have various learning disabilities or challenging behaviour. Both services are collated with the Stoneside Family support service in the south side of Glasgow.

What is the role?

As a Residential Worker you will be encouraging and supporting young people between the ages 8 and 18 in reaching their full potential and achieving new objectives by creating a stimulating environment whilst ensuring safety at all times. Therefore you will require sound knowledge of care planning under the GIRFEC principles and national care standards along with a comprehensive understanding of safeguarding.

You will be planning and supporting young people in taking part in activities based at the service as well as out in the community such as trips to the cinema, soft play, beach, swimming, bowling and various other sports activities in order to develop their social and life skills. You will also provide support with day to day activities, attend to personal care and administer medication following appropriate training.

Shift pattern:

If successful, your hours (based on which suits you and the service most) will be a combination of the following shifts:

Early Shift: 7:15am to 2:45pm - Shortened Early Shift: 7:15am to 11:15am

Late Shift: 2:15pm to 9:45pm - Shortened Late Shift 4:00pm to 8:00pm

Night shift 9:30pm to 7:30am

What will you need?

* A core desire and commitment to helping children/young people that have disabilities.

* A flexibility in working patterns.

* The experience of working in residential care setting and undertaking personal care as required.

* Safeguarding knowledge.

* A refined knowledge of GIRFEC and National Care Standards.

* The ability to work well as part of a team and in your own initiative.

* Excellent communication and relationship building skills.

* Be positive and aspirational about self and others.

* SVQ Level 3 Children and Young People or HNC in Social care or equivalent for Residential Workers.
