Are you an environmental expert with experience producing and reviewing environment assessments?

Based in London the Transport and Works Act Orders Unit sits within the Department of Transport. The unit aims to deal with applications submitted to the Secretary of State under both the Transport and Works Act 1992 and the Planning Act 2008. 

This is an exciting opportunity for someone interested in helping to deliver robust planning decisions surrounding railway, tramway, strategic road, airport and major harbour projects. 

The consent applications you'll be dealing with will pose challenging problems - you'll need to get to grips with technical information on environmental impacts and decide what weight to place on diverse opinions from advisors and interested parties in making recommendations to ministers. You'll be part of a diverse team committed to delivering robust consents through the planning process and will have the satisfaction of influencing high-profile decisions on multi-million pound projects. 

Role responsibilities 

As our Environmental Manager, some of your key responsibilities will include: 

•advising on scoping and screening requests in relation to applications for Transport and Works Act Orders 
•undertaking Habitats Regulations Assessments / Appropriate Assessments and advising whether sufficient information has been provided, whether there will be likely significant effects, or adverse effects on site integrity and recommending follow-up steps 
•ensuring that all Orders under the Transport and Works Act and Planning Act are consistent with Government policy, are legally acceptable and meet the required drafting standards for Statutory Instruments 
•assisting legal teams in preparing defence cases in the event that decisions are challenged

You will be highly organised thriving in an environment where you will have to work to statutory deadlines, ensuring that you are detail-focused and being able to examine complex information and simplify it. 

You will be organised and proactive with the ability to work well in a fast-paced environment, using pragmatic and innovative solutions to deliver results.
