Network Rail’s South East Route is part of the new Southern Region, which serves passengers and freight operators from Devon in the west to Kent in the east, linking major towns and cities, transporting large numbers of commuters and serving channel routes to Europe as well as Gatwick and Southampton airports. The region is responsible for the major London stations of Waterloo, Clapham Junction, London Bridge, Victoria, Cannon Street and Charing Cross.

We operate the busiest and most congested rail lines in the country and are dedicated to putting passengers first and to delivering a step-change in the quality of the service we provide them. Our key projects include:

·        Redeveloping Gatwick Airport station to provide more capacity

·        Unblocking bottlenecks at Croydon and Woking

·        Major signalling schemes to bring us into the 21st century

·        Major investment to improve the resilience of the railway across the region

The new regions have been formed as part of our ‘Putting Passengers First’ transformation programme. We are now looking for a senior communications manager to manage a team delivering creative services – video and design – as well as event management, campaigns and internal communications.

About the role

Based in Southwark London, you will manage a small team.  

The role involves working closely with people across the business, from senior managers to frontline teams, and is close partnership with communications colleagues in our train operating companies. You will have a strong focus on engaging employees to improve performance and services to passengers. You will also need to recognise where there are potential reputational risks and help devise strategies and plans to mitigate them, working with colleagues across the wider region and route communications teams.

The role requires an experienced communications professional with a wide range of skills, including a strong track record in managing and supporting team through change.

 Key Accountabilities

1.      Analyse and manage the development and implementation of communication strategies that enable the delivery of the objectives contained in Network Rail’s corporate communications strategy

2.      Lead communications activities which present reputational risk or opportunities for the business

3.      Establish and effective network of internal and external contacts and provide direction/influence to senior managers and external industry parties and funding organisations where appropriate.

4.      Provide direct management and development of a team including carrying out regular 121’s, appraisals, objective setting and performance monitoring.

5.      Provide guidance on all communications activity undertaken by key personnel including Directors, Project Managers and sponsors, delivering consistency with the approved communications strategy and in accordance with Network Rail’s corporate policies.

6.      Assist with delivery of Network Rail’s corporate internal communications programme and act as a conduit for material/information for corporate communications channels.

7.      Check that all branding used on the project and activity complies with Network Rail’s corporate policy on branding, visual identity and image.

8.      Produce regular reports on all communications activities on the project, including budget.

9.      Implement the major incident communications plan as required.

Essential

·         Substantial experience in corporate communications

·         High standards of written and spoken communication

·         The experience and personal credibility to work effectively with senior managers

·         Strong influencing skills

·         Proven ability to grasp, understand and promote complex and sensitive issues in a persuasive and sensible way

·         Ability to develop and maintain a wide network of stakeholder contacts

·         Experience of managing teams through change

Desirable

·         Evidence of good planning and financial skills, with the ability to deliver projects and activities on time and within budget

·         Experience of directing and managing agency support

·         Educated to degree level or relevant professional qualifications

·         Evidence of continuing professional development

We adhere to a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the following pay range: £42,971 - £48,342
