About the role 

No two days are the same for our Marine Surveyors. You will inspect, audit and survey ships and maritime ship operators to ensure UK and International Regulations are being met, delivering exceptional customer service alongside experienced colleagues. 

We have a number or Marine Surveyor positions available in the Engineer, Naval Architect, Nautical and Ship Surveyor disciplines. Please see the Role Profiles attached below for further information about the responsibilities associated with each role.

Important information 

You will operate to a flexible working pattern consisting of an average of 37 hours per week. On occasion, there will be a requirement to work outside of ‘normal hours’. 

You will be required to work and travel on official duty within the UK and short term visits overseas or offshore, which may involve overnight stays away from home.

Licences

A full driving licence for driving in the UK and a passport valid for international travel are required. 

Due to the nature of the role, you will also be required to undergo a Counter-Terrorist Check (CTC). Gaining CTC Clearance will normally require you to have been a resident in the UK for a minimum of 3 years, and only candidates who meet this requirement will be considered for the role.

Allowances

Whilst you complete your training, you will receive a starting salary of £45,605. This equates to £42,105 basic salary and £3,500 allowances for the initial training period (additional allowances are obtainable and will be dependent on certain individual qualifying criteria). 

Your basic salary will increase to £44,105 after you successfully complete your first years training and allowances will increase to up to £12,000, in line with the “Surveyor Allowances” document, attached below.

Successful candidates will be expected to have a medical.

Nationality statement

Candidates will be subject to UK immigration requirements as well as Civil Service nationality rules.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

If you are successful at the video interview you will then be invited to attend a final interview at one of our Marine Offices in the UK. 

The selection process will be designed specifically for the role. As a result, your assessment could include: 

• an interview 
• an interview with one or more exercises 
• a full day of activities including interactive, written and timed exercises

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom working to prevent the loss of lives at sea and is responsible for implementing British and international maritime law and safety policy. It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.
