Due to successfully gaining a number of major commissions within South Wales we are seeking an ambitious and enthusiastic bat licensed ecologist (at Senior or Consultant level) for an immediate start within our existing ecology team in Cardiff.

This is an exciting opportunity to fulfil a crucial role within our national ecology team, with prospects for career progression and the ability to develop to your full potential within a professional forward thinking, commercial organisation.

The Role

Working as an integral member of the ecology team your role will be instrumental in achieving the timely, efficient and thorough completion of projects via desk based studies, surveying and reporting.

The successful applicant will be Welsh (and preferably English) bat licensed and have experience of designing and leading bat surveys, undertaking call analysis, impact assessment, mitigation and applications for European Protected Species License (EPSL).

Working closely with our existing bat ecologists, you will undertake a variety of habitat and species surveys, produce survey reports, method statements, design mitigation strategies and provide assistance with the preparation of EPS development licences.

You will work on schemes of all sizes ranging from large infrastructure projects, bridge repair/maintenance, mixed use developments through to school/small scale housing projects.

You will be expected to design, plan and lead surveys and will be a key player in the overall project delivery of the team, helping to develop and diversify/expand our expertise

You will have the opportunity to work within multi-disciplinary project teams (including water and flood management colleagues, civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, architects and landscape designers) and contribute to the overall success of a variety of development and infrastructure projects.

While the majority of our work is currently based in South Wales, we are part of a national ecology team and are working on projects throughout the UK.

Key Responsibilities:

Your key responsibilities will include but will not be limited to:

  • Lead and undertake bat surveys in consultation with the Senior Bat Ecologist
  • Design, plan and undertake a variety of species and habitat ecological surveys (taking a lead role with bat surveys)
  • Undertake bat call analysis
  • Produce associated reports to a high quality and in line with the company standards.
  • Assist with ecological mitigation design and other tasks as necessary.
  • Train and mentor junior staff as a part of their professional progression/growth.

Requirements: (Essential)

Natural Resources Wales or Natural England Bat Licence.

Applicants are expected to have an Honours degree in Ecology or a related subject, with ideally a minimum of 3 years consultancy experience or relevant vocational experience.

Full or Associate membership (or eligibility for Associate membership as a minimum) of CIEEM or IEMA

Punctuality, reliability and presentability: e.g. attending site for meetings/surveys, undertaking work, meeting deadlines.

You should have good report writing and IT skills.

You will need a working knowledge of mitigation principles and environmental/wildlife legislation in relation to protected and invasive species.

A full driving licence is essential for this role and a willingness to carry out surveys during unsociable hours and at times away from the office base.

Requirements: (Desirable)

Highly Desirable:

You will hold licences (Natural England and/or Natural Resources Wales) for another European Protected Species (as well as bats)

You should have a working knowledge of the planning system as it affects ecological issues.

Previous ecological work on major infra-structure development

Desirable:

Capability in GIS would be advantageous
