Job description

We have an exciting role within our team here at MCA for a passionate Future Propulsion and Fuel Safety Lead. Brining to us your excellent ability to drafting and create policy documents you will lead you team to develop and maintain UK policies and regulations relevant to Future Propulsion and Fuel Safety, whilst supporting the delivery of the wider remit of Ship Standards.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership for the delivery of policy areas assigned to team.
• Ensure team delivers objectives and maintain the MCA expected behaviours.
• Actively engage in all aspects of the regulatory process.
• Ensure that stakeholder consultation, briefs, ministerial submissions, and any other associated material are prepared, cleared, and distributed by agreed deadlines.
• Identify potential risks to the MCA within their policy areas and develop appropriate plans to mitigate such risks.
• Represent the UK and MCA internal and external meetings associated.
• Draft and/or check documents such as Merchant Shipping Notices, Marine Guidance Notes, instructions for Surveyors
• Ensure government senior management and Ministers receive appropriate briefings and relevant information to take informed decisions.
• Understand and support the DMSS contribution to the overall objectives of the MCA.
• Ensure that the MCA visions and values are upheld in all aspects of their work.

You will be a natural leader who isn’t afraid to roll your sleeves up and get involved. You will take immense pride in ensuring that regulations are up to date. As a problem solver this role will give you the opportunity to review the bigger picture engaging with piers on innovative solutions to the current climate crisis and alternative fuels. Your communications skills (both written and orally) are one of your greatest assets and naturally tailor your approach to suit your audience.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom working to prevent the loss of lives at sea and is responsible for implementing British and international maritime law and safety policy. It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.

Its responsibilities include coordinating search and rescue (SAR) on the coastline and at sea through His Majesty's Coastguard (HMCG), ensuring that ships meet international and UK safety standards, monitoring and preventing coastal water pollution and testing and issuing Merchant Navy Certificates of Competency (licences) for ships' officers and crew to STCW requirements The organisation is led by Virginia McVea, its Chief Executive, who took up post in February 2023.The MCA are chiefly responsible for the syllabus and national training standards issued by the Merchant Navy Training Board (based at the UK Chamber of Shipping).
