About Us

The London Borough of Sutton has a long-standing commitment to reducing our impact on the environment. We lead on environmental sustainability and we are ambitious for Sutton having launched the council’s new Environment Strategy in March 2019.

This role is in the Environment Strategy team. We manage the council’s waste disposal contract, textile banks contract and the reuse and recycling centre contract. The borough achieved the second highest recycling rate in London in 2017/18, recycling 50% of all household waste.

We also manage performance and risk for the Environment, Housing & Regeneration directorate. We respond to environment-related consultations and provide data analysis; and bid for external funding to deliver projects.

About the role

We’re recruiting a Contract and Performance Officer within the Environment Strategy Team to manage our waste disposal, textile banks and recycling centre contracts and lead on the directorate’s management of performance and risk.

Working with the South London Waste Partnership and our neighbouring boroughs you’ll ensure we get excellent value for money from our waste disposal contracts, textile banks contracts and Household Reuse and Recycling Centre contract, liaising closely with contractors to secure improvements for our residents.

You’ll be responsible for the council’s waste disposal budget, which involves forecasting of waste tonnages and costs; monitoring and reporting on progress throughout the year to keep informed senior officers and finance colleagues.

You’ll take the lead on performance monitoring on behalf of the Environment, Housing and Regeneration directorate, producing reports for senior management and committees.

The role is part of the Environment Strategy team, and there will be opportunities for project management and working on wider waste initiatives.

About you

Working with organisations and partners will come naturally to you. You will have experience of contract monitoring; have a flexible approach to overcoming problems and barriers to improve services for residents; and be interested in the environment, sustainability and waste management.

You’ll be analytical and have experience of working with complex data sets from different sources. You will have the ability to forecast, interpret and analyse data and financial information to produce meaningful insights using a variety of IT software and applications.

You’ll have strong written and verbal communication skills and be a self-starter who can work to deadlines. You’ll have the ability to work independently and propose ideas for improvement. You’ll be confident in preparing and presenting performance and financial information to senior management teams.

Our offer

We can offer you a supportive environment to grow and develop your career with the opportunity to put your ideas across. Innovation and ambition are strongly encouraged here in Sutton, and you'll get a great feel for that working in our friendly and collaborative environment.

We offer a modern and flexible working environment for our staff allowing you to work flexibly from our offices in Carshalton, whilst on the move, and at home following the introduction of Google Chromebooks, Apps and technology, which have acted as a key enabler for collaborative and streamlined working.

We also offer a huge variety of staff benefits including:

  • 27 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Flexi-time
  • Local and national discounts for shopping, eating out and leisure activities
  • Comprehensive learning and development programme
  • Interest free season ticket loans
  • Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Bicycle loan facilities and cycle to work scheme
  • Childcare vouchers
  • Subsidised gym membership
