About the job

Do you have a background in engineering or science?

Would you like the opportunity to apply your expertise and engage in international negotiations to improve environmental standards of vehicles?

If so, we would love to hear from you.

Job description

The Department for Transport’s International Vehicle Standards division is offering a unique opportunity for enthusiastic engineers or scientists to drive forward the development and delivery of UK Government policy for cleaner and quieter road vehicles.

We are looking for a Technical Specialist (HEO) and a Senior Technical Specialist (SEO) to join our Vehicle Environment Team. You will have the opportunity to apply your technical skills to the development of new environmental standards, engaging with stakeholders at both national and international level. You will be responsible for shaping future standards for vehicles alongside a dedicated team of likeminded engineers, scientists and policy specialists.

Our Team is responsible for setting the standards for pollutant emissions and environmental impacts of vehicles, from cars and motorcycles all the way through to buses, trucks and non-road mobile machinery. We are also leading on cutting-edge research programmes relating to vehicle emissions, vehicle noise and fuel quality.

Your role will involve ensuring that the UK's interests are represented at international meetings, including at the United Nations, providing leadership and innovation in the improvement of vehicle standards. Our participation in international meetings is expected to become increasingly important within the current political environment of leaving the European Union.

Both roles offer a unique chance to develop your career within the Department and Government, and to apply your engineering/science expertise to drive forward global vehicle improvements that have a real impact on air quality and the environment. Your development as a technical specialist in vehicle environmental standards will be invaluable to the Department and wider Government.

Successful candidates will be considered for both roles and will be appointed based on their strengths and experience demonstrated throughout the application process.

Responsibilities

Your key responsibilities will include:
• Leading areas of policy development and delivery relating to vehicle environmental standards, providing specialist advice to DfT Ministers and attending international meetings and conferences where required
• Driving forward strategic programmes and research projects to deliver the innovation and improvements required for vehicle environmental standards in the UK and internationally
• Providing technical expertise within the International Vehicle Standards division for ad-hoc requirements, demonstrating flexibility across the other relevant policy areas where necessary
• Providing specialist advice to the IVS correspondence team in responding to enquiries from members of the public, the media and Ministers.

Occasional UK and international travel will be required.

About you

You have previous experience of working with complex technical engineering or scientific information within roles including research, development or analysis. You demonstrate an interest and a basic understanding of aspects relating to the automotive industry, its research and development processes or procedures.

You have strong analytical skills and the ability to quickly understand and evaluate a range of complex technical information and summarise this effectively for a non-technical audience.

You have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide-range of different partners to build trusted relationships to achieve desired outcomes.

You are exceptionally organised with the ability to innovate, adapt and thrive in a fast paced, complex and changing environment.
