Do you have excellent analytical and influencing skills? We are looking for a Deputy Director with a particular focus on economics to join our team. This is a brand new role to strategically develop and manage ESRC’s current and future research funding activity.

About the role
The purpose of the Deputy Director (Economics) role is to lead and to take personal responsibility for a number of these teams, including those with an economics focus. This will include the team setting up the new, UKRI funded,  and related funding.

You will be required to engage with a wide range of academic and broader stakeholder communities to catalyse research ideas (working closely with others across the organisation), to drive forward their subsequent development and delivery, then to ensure that outputs, outcomes and impacts are captured and optimised, and that lessons are learnt for future funding calls.

Internally this will involve contributing to strategic decision making and driving a culture of high-performance teamwork across the ESRC.  Externally the post holder will engage with UKRI sister councils, leading academic stakeholders, strategic partners and key networks, including relevant government departments, and ESRC funded Institutes such as the Centre for the Microeconomic Analysis of Public Policy (CPP) based at the Institute for Fiscal Studies and the Centre for Economic Performance (CEP) at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Key responsibilities

• Contributing to council strategy formation, supporting strategic decision making within UKRI, and working to deliver the ESRC’s vision for social science and specific , with a particular focus on economics
• Collaboration with other councils in a wide number of research/portfolio areas to drive cross-cutting and interdisciplinary initiatives and ensure a strong social science presence, including but also beyond economics

About you

You will have:

• A degree or equivalent experience in economics or a relevant discipline, and demonstrable ability to engage in discussion and debate about key topics in economics and related areas and methods
• Commitment to articulating and helping others to understand and optimise the contribution that economics and related fields can make to improving policy and business, and to understanding and addressing societal challenges
• Experience of managing budgets and the exercise of financial control
