Job description

We will look to you to lead the Medical Administration Team within the Seafarer Safety & Health branch and to lead on policy for seafarer medical fitness examinations and medical care on board ship. You will also be responsible for policy and guidance for carriage of medical stores on vessels and for the Ship Captain's Medical Guide.

You will have policy responsibility for all seafarer medical matters, working directly with MCA's Chief Medical Adviser

This is also a fantastic unique opportunity to be at the forefront of delivering a new digital Approved Doctors’ Information System to aid efficiency across the MCA.
 

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

• Managing arrangements for delivery and quality management of UK seafarer medical examinations and medical appeals (currently about 52,000 medicals per year)
• Policy responsibility for statutory requirements for medical stores on board ship, taking account of UK and international legislation
• Contributing to international policy discussions and developing and maintaining national policy, regulations and associated guidance to masters and crews and to industry
• Advising on the most difficult casework and drafting Ministerial replies or advice to senior officers on medical matters
• Liaison with Seafarer Training and Certification Branch on medical aspects of certificates of competency
