HR is at the very centre of WHSmith. We have a team of specialists who cover Employee Relations, Learning & Development, Recruitment and Reward, plus a team of HR Generalists.

HR supports the entire WHSmith Group which is over 14,000 employees. Because life moves so fast in our business, HR has to move quickly too. You'll need to take the initiative and be ready to make big decisions, fast. At WHSmith, HR is all about finding innovative, commercial solutions and putting them into action.

We're now looking for an experienced HR Advisor to join our Employee Relations team in Swindon, to provide advice across our High Street, Travel and Post Office stores in conjunction with our people policies and UK Employment Legislation.

What you'll do:

We're a fast moving business that constantly keeps ahead of the curve and our HR team have to adapt and react just as fast. We have to be on the ball and take the initiative; so you'll need to be a confident communicator, be resilient and be able to manage HR cases through to completion including; Disciplinary, Grievance and Absence Management. You will also be required to support the Employee Relations Manager with ACAS early conciliation claims and Employment Tribunal cases so experience of dealing with these is desirable.

The Employee Relations team utilise data reports to identify trends of issues and cases and this data is used to develop solutions to up skill our line managers; a keen eye for detail and an analytical mindset are therefore key.
Our HR teams work closely with our Stores to make sure they're up to date with any legislative changes and support with any restructures or TUPE processes. You'll also be expected to liaise with Trade Union Representatives as required, so being credible and able to build relationships with key stakeholders will be important to you.

Who we're looking for:

As an important member of our HR team, you will have previous experience within a similar HR role, be a confident communicator over the phone and via email and have a 'can do' attitude. The ability to support staff that are based remotely is essential. We are looking for someone who is detailed, can manage their own time, and is organised and dependable. This is a fast paced role dealing with high volume queries so being able to remain calm under pressure is an important trait.

You'll be passionate about HR and have a good understanding of up to date UK Employment Law. To fulfil this role you'll be able to thrive in a challenging environment and have a proven track record managing a busy workload.

A HR Qualification would be advantageous, as would experience working in a unionised environment. A passion for retail and an understanding that everything we do is to give our customers the best experience is vital.

If you're driven by results and want an autonomous role with a company that encourages employees to bring new ideas and ways of thinking to the table then why not explore what a career with WHSmith could do for you?

Company

WHSmith started in 1792 with a small news vendor in Little Grosvenor Street, London, followed by the opening of our first bookstall in Euston Station in 1848. We quickly established ourselves as the favoured newsagent, stationers and bookseller opening stores across the UK. From this point on, there has been no looking back.
