If so, we have a rare opportunity for a Deputy Receiver of Wreck to join us at the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA), and we’d love to hear from you.

Job description

You will be taking an active role in all aspects of the Receiver of Wreck’s (RoW) work and statutory duties. You will be assisting in all areas of administration relating to matters of wreck and salvage within UK waters and respond to incidents involving wreck and salvage throughout the UK.

You will lead in the enforcement of relevant legislation, including in the investigation and prosecution process, gathering of evidence, the preparation of material for court and providing evidence in court.

The role also involves education and outreach, representing and highlighting the requirements of wreck and salvage law in a variety of public and Government fora, including public speaking at conferences and other events.
 

Responsibilities

Your duties will include:
• taking a leading role in the formulation of policy and development of strategic direction of the RoW and wider Government policy in related fields
• acting as a focal point for RoW enforcement work throughout the legal process, including attending the execution of search warrants, writing statements and giving evidence in court
• taking a leading role in operational response to maritime casualties and managing wreck incidents
• Manging all aspects of official reports of wreck and salvage, including decision-making in relation to legal ownership
• Providing operational, technical and legal advice on the removal and disposal of Royal Fish in the UK to local authorities and contractors, working alongside the Cetacean Stranding’s Investigation Project (CSIP), Coastguards and the MCA Press Office
• Acting as a role model for the Assistant RoW secondees, providing all line management responsibilities and support

About you

We are looking for someone who has exceptional interpersonal skills and experience of providing a quality customer service to members of the public. With excellent written and oral communication skills and can tailor your messages to suit your audience. You will also have experience of working with case management or problem solving and providing solutions.

You can demonstrate strong influencing skills and confidently engage with internal and external partners. You are resilient and apply a flexible working approach to accommodate short notice travel or incidents. You are also a confident IT user with experience of using Excel and working with spreadsheets.

You will also have experience or an understanding of wreck and salvage legislation and issues, legislation that impacts maritime heritage management, or the concerns of recreational diving community or commercial salvors, or be prepared to quickly gain knowledge in these areas.
