General Summary:

The MCR Manager is responsible for managing a busy, in-house MCR which is the recipient of all incoming circuits via satellite downlinks, fibre, IP contribution and the Discovery WAN infrastructure.  The MCR is responsible for the technical quality of all incoming and outgoing circuits and as such, perform technical line-ups for TX, Production and Digital.  All typical MCR duties are deployed including all internal and external switching as well as establishing 4-wire communications, mix minus circuits and such like. 

The manager is the principal on site contact for all facility partners working as part of an organisation delivering services to the international business, ensuring the MCR operates to the highest standards.

 

The role involves working flexibly ensuring cover during live productions.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, lead and develop a team of people including supervisors and MCR engineers
  • Oversee and govern the MCR with responsibility for ensuring services are delivered to the highest standards
  • Establish regular communication and strong working relationships with key partners within the business with a focus on future strategy and planned throughput
  • Work collaboratively with other GT&O organisations i.e. Ingest, Engineering, Production Operations, Programming, OAP, Preview Team and Transmission ensuring working relationships and communication are of the highest standards
  • Identify key development opportunities for improved workflows, system development and enhanced reporting. Driving forward the system and software development needs for the facility with Engineering team, overseeing testing, implementation, and relevant training.
  • Produce detailed metrics and reporting on utilisation and costs
  • Escalation point and key contact for resolution of high priority issues for the department
  • Successfully manage the relationship between the MCR and the wider business globally
  • Mentor and coach direct reports
  • Develop in-house talent through the provision of comprehensive technical training
  • Actively manage POs, invoices and track additional costs
  • On behalf of MCR lead projects and initiatives with focus on successful delivery of projects on time and in budget
  • Manage workflow and system changes
  • Provide support to the line manager in operational and strategic decision making
  • Identify savings opportunities; promote sharing of best practice and process change opportunities to increase efficiency
  • Collate costs, resource and personnel requirements for MCR for input into the business planning process on request
  • Assist in MCR execution and implementation of new business plans, launches and initiatives.
  • Other duties as required

Requirements

  • Significant experience in MCR management within broadcast and the commercial sector
  • Strong leadership and team management skills demonstrating the ability to motivate, develop and inspire a team
  • Proven track record in managing large, successful teams, delivering to the highest standards
  • Demonstrable the ability to successfully form and manage relationships in an international environment
  • Excellent knowledge of MCR technology and workflows including video and audio routing (traditional SDI and IP)
  • Thorough knowledge of Broadcast Control Systems, ideally BNCS (using Packaging and direct routing) and Nevion Video IPath
  • Adept at working collaboratively with other service delivery internal departments
  • Pro-active in trouble-shooting, problem solving and avoidance of issues
  • Adaptable and flexible in a challenging, demanding and fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to represent MCR at a high level in meetings
  • Take the lead for the department in projects and initiatives, ensuring a considered and effective approach is deployed, projects are delivered on time and to budget and risks and issues highlighted
  • Ability to assimilate information from multiple sources, demonstrating strong analytical skills and with the capability to see the implications across the business and make informed decisions
  • Ability to prioritize and work autonomously under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Strong team player and solid interpersonal skills
  • Experience of budget and expense management
