St Albans is a unique English Cathedral City with a colourful history which can be seen in the Roman remains and variety of beautiful architecture, heritage sites and conservation areas.  Close to London and set within Green Belt, off the M25, A1M and M1 the District includes a cathedral, historic city centre, market town and charming villages.  Our offices are in the city centre near to the Thameslink train station (London St Pancras 20 minutes and Luton Parkway 11 minutes), shops and restaurants. In short it is a great place to live and work.

As one of the busiest Planning Authorities in the UK, and with a new draft Strategic Plan identifying major development in the Green Belt and an Enterprise Zone, it’s an exciting time to join us!

You will lead on the consideration and negotiation of complex planning applications to facilitate the implementation of the Local Plan, and provide professional expertise at Committees, Planning Appeals and Enforcement cases, as needed.

With considerable experience in the field and chartered membership of the RTPI or full membership of PIA, you will work on a range of planning cases involving Conservation Areas, Listed Building and large developments. Excellent negotiation skills and a flexible approach to work are essential to this post.

As our planning team continues to flourish, we are keen to strengthen our team with the addition of experienced Chartered Planners, including those working overseas. You will join our team and contribute to the delivery of professional advice, expertise and evaluation on all aspects of the development management work to customers to meet statutory and service requirements.

We are particularly interested in candidates who would be eligible to apply for an ancestry visa https://www.gov.uk/ancestry-visa/eligibility

The post is Politically Restricted and subject to a Basic Disclosure Check.

We offer a competitive package which also includes learning and development opportunities, essential user car allowance, flexitime or flexible working options (e.g. nine-day fortnight, compressed hours, partial homeworking, school hours/term time working patterns), up to 31 days annual leave (dependent on length of service), reimbursement of professional fees, pension scheme and leisure and travel discounts.

For an informal discussion, please contact Sarah Ashton, Development Manager on 0011 44 01727 814634.

Closing date for applications: 31st January 2020.

Interviews will take place in mid-February – overseas candidates can be interviewed via Skype.

The Council recognises the importance of finding this balance and offers a range of different programs and initiatives, such as flexi-time flexible working arrangements in the form of part-time, job-share, compressed hours, full and partial home working. These are available across a range of roles from administrative level to senior specialist roles.
