The Role

We are looking to recruit a Senior Design Engineer within our Structures and Bridges team. You will work collaboratively within the team to lead on asset management for over 1000 highway bridges, plus other highway structures.

Our partnership with Staffordshire County Council was established in 2014, and is a £1bn pound initiative to help deliver sustainable economic growth to the region. Our 70-person strong Staffordshire Design Hub (SDH) leads on a full spectrum of infrastructure work and transport planning for the council and private clients (locally and nationally), while also playing a leading national role in asset management.

One of our biggest successes to date has been our support of Staffordshire's economy through our 'Red Carpet' process. This initiative shows the Partnership at its best with planners, designers, project managers and constructors all pulling together irrespective of their employing organisation to make Staffordshire a place where developers find it easy to do business.

  • Managing a challenging programme of structural highway works, from identification of defects, risk prioritisation and managing forward works programmes with an emphasis on client requirements and innovation
  • Working within a multidisciplinary consultancy environment to coordinate strategic asset management plans
  • Manage a risk-based inspection programme for highway bridges, footbridges and retaining walls over all obstacles, including main river and railway
  • Identify effective maintenance and design solutions that are consistent with the briefs and overarching policies
  • Checking and approving engineering designs, calculations, and drawings produced by both internal teams and external clients on behalf of Technical Approval Authority
  • Forecasting and monitoring financial performance for your projects, providing regular detailed reports and commentary to support any variations
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations
  • Leading on continued growth of the account, building and maintaining strong relationships with developers and other prospective clients.
  • Implement effective, value for money and innovative design solutions to meet technical and project requirements
  • Liaise with clients (both internal and external) and ensure their requirements are effectively communicated to the wider team / account
  • Prepare and check tender documents and scheme cost estimates
  • Prepare and check technical documents and reports and assist in the preparation of expressions of interest and tenders
  • Manage, develop, coach and motivate employees in the team and support with recruitment as and when required
  • Assist with project / resource planning and programming
  • Effective management and response of project related correspondence
  • Lead on ensuring suitable contract administration is in place for all NEC3 contracts



What are we looking for?

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng + MICE or MIStructE)
  • Computer literate and thoroughly conversant with MS office suite and relevant engineering software packages
  • Experience in the design, assessment and inspection of highway structures
  • Knowledge of Highway Law
  • Experience in asset management
  • Thorough knowledge of CDM Regulations
  • Good experience of the co-ordination of the design process and team management
  • Good communication skills dealing with clients, project partners, supply chain, elected representatives and the public
  • Client focused approach to service delivery
  • Environmental awareness
  • Tool Box talk IOSH managing safely
