Job description

Department for Transport – Digital Services

The Senior Cloud Engineer role is fully embedded into the Department for Transport’s Digital Service team.
Our Digital Service, as the Centre of Excellence, will:

The Department for Transport's (DfT) Digital Service is a leading-edge government capability that provides digital, data and technology (DDaT) to our users. We were established in September 2017 and deliver a blend of services, primarily to our ministerial department.
DfT works with our agencies and partners to support the transport network that helps the UK’s businesses and gets people and goods travelling around the country. We plan and invest in transport infrastructure to keep the UK on the move.

The Cloud Engineering team is tasked with owning, supporting and developing our cloud infrastructure and application platforms. You will work closely with Live Services Cyber Security, Information Assurance, Architecture and suppliers to develop and maintain our core infrastructure and services. Ensuring they meet all Departmental and Government security standards.
 

Responsibilities

Roles Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

• Direct a team of highly skilled Cloud Engineers across multiple sites in building, managing, supporting and maintaining solutions according to departmental policy.
• Contribute the production of the DfT family’s digital, data and technology strategy, taking responsibility for cloud and application platform components.
• Be responsible for producing, maintaining and delivering DfT’s strategies on Operating System deployment/patching and Data Resilience.
• Owns the operational and technical relationships with suppliers making sure services and products are delivered and aligned to industry best practice, regulatory and contractual requirements. Liaising with contract holders within Service Management team.
• Upgrade systems by conferring with vendors and services; developing, testing, evaluating and installing enhancements and new software.
• Provide advice and expertise to other areas of Digital Service and the wider DfT community on all areas of Cloud Infrastructure and support.
• Support junior members of the team by providing technical expertise and mentoring.

About you

• Significant and demonstrable experience working within a cloud environment with specific experience around Google Cloud Platforms or O365
• Experience of designing Cloud environments including Network and Security requirements
• Demonstration of design of processes and automation around Cloud Environment Operations
• Ability to communicate with Business stakeholders around options within the Cloud Platform
• Demonstration of Problem Management capabilities

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

The sift is due to take place Week Commencing 9th March.

Interviews/assessments are likely to be held Week Commencing 23rd March.

Interviews will likely be held in London.

Our office location is currently under review and a new office location will be decided in 2020. Our current office is based in Ashdown House Whilst it is likely that our new office location will also be in Hastings town centre , this may be subject to change and staff will be informed as soon as possible once a new location is confirmed.
