The Role

Amey Consulting provide design and other support services to Staffordshire County Council (SCC) and developers across the whole of the county. We are busy and are looking to grow the team with the addition of a Local Highways Engineer to assist in the delivery of the Integrated Transport programme, Divisional Highways programme and other local highways improvements.

Our partnership with Staffordshire County Council was established in 2014, and is a £1bn pound initiative to help deliver sustainable economic growth to the region. Our 70-person strong Staffordshire Design Hub (SDH) leads on a full spectrum of infrastructure work and transport planning for the council and private clients (locally and nationally), while also playing a leading national role in asset management.

Working on public realm improvements such as pedestrian and cycle schemes, you will have autonomy within your role and take complete ownership on the projects you work on; including end to end project management, financial oversight and detailed design work. Due to the scope of this role, it's likely that you will have worked in a similar role within a local authority and will certainly have a background in highways design.

Based in central Stafford and in the same building as SCC, we have large modern spaces to work in which are a short walk from the train station and with excellent road links to Birmingham, Derby, Manchester and Telford. The highways group is a friendly team of c.70 professionals with a broad range of experience.

Having worked at Assistant or Civil Engineer level previously, you may have completed a professional qualification or have a training plan towards this. We pride ourselves on mentoring engineers and can offer significant support towards Chartership, with a bonus of up to £5k on completion.

In a typical week, you may be involved in:

  • Production of highway designs including layouts, materials, construction details, calculations, drawings and documents
  • Preparing technical reports, feasibility studies, RSA briefs, public correspondence and other written documents
  • Working up Traffic Regulation Orders
  • Undertaking site visits and inspections
  • Attending meetings and discussions with elected members, the client and other designers
  • Obtaining Statutory Undertakers information
  • Attending Public Consultation events
  • Providing support and progress updates to the Senior Engineer
  • Liaising with other Engineers within the design team to ensure compliance with all relevant technical standards.

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Be able to demonstrate developing experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, probably gained in an Assistant or Civil Engineer role or equivalent
  • Be able to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working under supervision
  • Be experienced in undertaking project related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject
  • Completion of a formal training agreement leading towards Chartered Engineer status as defined by the Engineering Council and agreeing a realistic programme towards achieving professional qualification, or alternatively achieving Incorporated Engineer status as defined by the Engineering Council
