Job description

This is a Cloud Engineer role that is fully embedded into the Department for Transport’s Digital Service team.

The Department for Transport's (DfT) Digital Service is a leading-edge government capability that provides digital, data and technology (DDaT) to our users. We were established in September 2017 and deliver a blend of services, primarily to our ministerial department.

DfT works with our agencies and partners to support the transport network that helps the UK’s businesses and gets people and goods travelling around the country. We plan and invest in transport infrastructure to keep the UK on the move.

The Cloud Engineering team is tasked with owning, supporting and developing our cloud infrastructure and application platforms. You will work closely with Live Services Cyber Security, Information Assurance, Architecture and suppliers to develop and maintain our core infrastructure and services. Ensuring they meet all Departmental and Government security standards.

Duties and responsibilities

Reporting to the Principle Cloud Engineer the role will:

•Interact with stakeholders across departments and will reach and influence a wide range of people across larger teams and communities. Having the ability to present technical information in a confident, clear, concise direct manner to a less technical audience.

•Use best practices monitoring, implementing, supporting and maintaining infrastructure technologies and solutions such as: compute, storage, infrastructure, software, virtual and cloud including IaaS, PaaS and SaaS.

•Take ownership of problems and proactively resolves technical problems, ensuring that technical solutions continue to meet business requirements.

•Provide technical support on incidents and implement changes for infrastructure and cloud technologies.
 

Responsibilities

•Monitoring and ensuring agreed quality and service performance targets, resolving operational incidents and problems.

•Provide advice to other areas of Digital Service on all areas of Cloud Infrastructure and support. Including creating and updating knowledge base articles.

•Being responsible for event management, availability management, capacity management and service asset and configuration management for Cloud Infrastructure.

•Responsible for the execution of disaster recovery activities, including their regular testing.

•Maintaining of automation scripts and code used to build infrastructure (IoC) in line with best practice.

•Participating in all phases of the delivery of digital, data and technology projects, e.g. working with the architects in the solution design and coordinating with service transition managers.

•Implementing changes and new products and services, by applying collaborative ways of working across the Digital Service, enabling beneficial changes to be made with minimum disruption to the services.

•Contributing to continual improvement and innovation of live services.

•Continuously building and developing the required skills and capabilities and sharing knowledge with other teams in Live Services.
