Job description

We have an exciting new position at MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch), supporting our Technical Support teams who provide a service which is pivotal to successful running of the branch and its business.

As the head of section you will be responsible for managing your team’s activities to deliver data retrieval, analysis and presentation in support of investigations; the provision, security and performance of the bespoke IT equipment used by the Branch, and the effectiveness and performance of the Branch’s marine casualty database.

You will have a line management responsibilities the section’s Technical Manager, IT Manager and Database Manager, along with a team of five staff.
 

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

- Developing the Technical Support section’s capabilities to keep pace with the adoption of new technologies in the maritime industry.

- Providing expert advice on data recovery to internal and external stakeholders, and represent the UK as policy lead for Voyage Data Recorders at international meetings including the IMO, IEC and ISO[1] (#_ftn1) working groups.

- You will support and guide the work of the IT Manager, Database Manager and Technical Manager to ensure that all aspects of work are being managed to the highest standard achievable.

As one of the team responsible for forensic data recovery and analysis, you will:

- Share on-call responsibilities with the three members of the Technical Team, ready to deploy at 2-hours’ notice, not more than 1 week in 4, to accident sites worldwide to carry out data recovery as part of the investigating team.

- On site, support the lead investigator through the identification, forensic recovery and analysis of technical evidence relating to marine accidents, which could include imaging and cloning of memory and the use of forensic analysis tools to recover embedded, protected or deleted data.

Travel

There will be some significant travel required to fulfil the duties of the role.


About you

The work of a Technical Support specialist will involve deployment to the scene of an accident. This can be arduous, involving the need to access ships via boat transfer and pilot ladder, and working in disrupted environments and confined spaces. You will need an acceptable level of fitness to fulfil this challenging role, and you will be required to react quickly and decisively to ensure perishable data is not lost or overwritten.

You will also be an excellent communicator who naturally engages well with others and influences positive outcomes. You will have the ability to produce accurate and clear written reports, working flexibly and dynamically at all times. You'll be confident in your ability to quickly gain a strong understanding of your business area and the work which your team produce, taking pride in being a hands on leader, who contributes to operational aspects of the department wherever required.

You'll be confident in using technology, with a high level of IT and technical competency.
